Metallics JTSS4 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver bit do I need for Metallics JTSS4 square drive tapping screws?
A #1 square (Robertson) bit. The JTSS4 calls for driver size 1R, with a recess measuring 0.091 across the flats and a gaging depth of 0.050 to 0.065 inch. A #2 square bit will not seat properly in a recess that small, so keep a #1 in the pouch for these.
2) Is a Type A tapping screw right for sheet metal boxes and straps, or do I need a self-drilling screw?
Type A is for thin sheet metal where you already have a pilot hole or a factory-punched hole. The JTSS4 has a gimlet point, which pierces and taps thin stock as it drives but is not a drill point, so it won't cut its own hole in heavier gauge steel. For unpunched structural or heavy gauge material you want a self-drilling (Type TEK) screw instead.
3) Will these meet a Buy American requirement on a federal or public job?
No. The JTSS4 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and the country of origin is listed as multiple. If your spec carries a domestic-content clause, these won't satisfy it.
4) How many Metallics JTSS4 screws come in a jar, and can I buy fewer?
The JTSS4 ships as a jar of 100. That is the order minimum, so 100 is the smallest quantity.
5) Will these screws strip out when driven with an impact driver?
The JTSS4 is rated to a minimum torsional strength of 24 lb-in and is case hardened to Rockwell C28-38. That is enough to drive into thin sheet metal, but a #6 screw at that rating will snap if you lean on an impact gun. Set the clutch low on a drill/driver and stop as the head seats.
6) Are these zinc screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
These are AISI 1016-1024 carbon steel with a zinc plating. Zinc plate is an indoor, dry-location finish; it will corrode in wet, exterior, or coastal service. For outdoor panels, rooftop equipment, or wash-down areas, specify stainless or a hot-dip coated fastener instead.
7) What thread pitch do these #6 tapping screws have, and what standard do they meet?
18 threads per inch, with the thread form to ASME B18.6.4 and head dimensions to ASME B18.6.3-2013. If a submittal calls out a Type A tapping screw to those standards, the JTSS4 matches.
8) Why use square drive instead of Phillips for overhead electrical work?
A square recess holds the bit without camming out, so you can start a screw one-handed overhead in a box or on a strut strap. The JTSS4 uses a square recess with tapered side walls and a conical bottom, which is what lets the bit stick in the head. Phillips will slip under the same load. Use a #1 square bit.
9) What trades actually use the Metallics JTSS series tapping screws?
They're stocked for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC work, fastening into sheet metal boxes, ductwork, straps, and enclosures. The #6 x 1-1/4 inch length gives enough reach to go through a strap or bracket and still get several threads of bite into the sheet behind it.
