Metallics JTS6 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I have to pre-drill for a #6 x 1/4 sharp point tapping screw?
No. The JTS6 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point, so it pierces and forms its own thread in thin sheet metal as it drives. Thread count is 18 per inch to ASME B18.6.4. In harder or thicker stock, a pilot hole still helps you avoid snapping the screw.
2) Do these screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The JTS6 is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. On a federally funded job with domestic sourcing language, these won't satisfy it.
3) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JTS6 tapping screws?
The JTS6 takes a #2 Phillips bit, and it also has a slot, so a flat blade works if that's what's in your pouch. The combo head means one screw covers both drivers on a panel job. Phillips recess diameter is 0.159 in., slot width 0.039 to 0.048 in. and slot depth 0.033 to 0.05 in.
4) Will the pan head sit flush or stand proud on a cover plate?
Pan head, so it sits on the surface, not flush. Head height runs 0.087 to 0.097 in. and head width 0.256 to 0.27 in., so figure roughly a tenth of an inch of stand-off and a little over a quarter inch of head footprint. If you need flush, specify a flat head instead.
5) Are these Metallics JTS6 screws suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
These are steel with a zinc finish, which handles dry interior and normally protected locations. Zinc plating is not a marine or sustained-wet coating, so for exterior, coastal or washdown areas use a stainless fastener instead.
6) Will a #6 tapping screw strip or snap when I run it in with an impact driver?
The JTS6 is rated to a 24 lb-in minimum torsional strength and is case hardened to Rockwell C28 to 38, built from AISI 1016 to 1024 steel. That's the point where the shank twists off, so set an impact or drill clutch well under it. On a #6 screw this small, a drill on low torque is safer than an impact.
7) How are these sold, loose or by the box?
The JTS6 ships in a jar of 100, which is the order minimum. Other sizes and quantities can be arranged by request.
8) What standard are these Metallics tapping screws built to?
Head and body dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2013, and the thread conforms to ASME B18.6.4. One caveat on the series: dimensions for the #9 diameter are independent of ASME B18.6.4. Recess penetration gaging depth is 0.055 to 0.080 in.
9) What trades actually use the JTS6 screw?
It's stocked for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work, the kind of fastener that goes into duct collars, device covers, strut clips, panel labels and sheet metal enclosures where you need a self-tapping screw and a short grip.
