Blackburn ATL750-12 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size conductor does the Blackburn ATL750-12 lug take?
The ATL750-12 is sized for 750 kcmil conductor, which is what the 750 in the part number refers to. It is a compression lug, so the barrel is crimped onto the conductor with a die matched to the lug, not torqued down on a setscrew. One conductor per barrel.
2) Can I use an aluminum compression lug like the ATL750-12 on copper cable?
No. The ATL750-12 barrel is aluminum and it is a die-specific compression lug, so it goes on aluminum conductor of the size it is made for. For 750 kcmil copper you want a copper compression lug rated for copper, or a dual-rated AL9CU mechanical lug. Putting a copper conductor in an aluminum-only barrel is a bad termination.
3) What bolt size does the ATL750-12 pad take, and will it land on a 1/2 inch stud?
Yes. The pad is a single hole drilled for a 1/2 inch bolt or stud, which is the usual landing pad size on switchgear, transformer pads and large panel bus. One hole means it needs a flat pad, not a two-hole NEMA drilled pad.
4) Is the Blackburn ATL750-12 UL listed, and what voltage is it good for?
It carries UL file E9809 and is rated 35 kV, so it can be used on medium-voltage terminations as well as ordinary 600 V work. Insulation and any stress-relief treatment at the termination are still your responsibility on MV cable.
5) Should I use a compression lug or a mechanical setscrew lug for a 750 kcmil aluminum feeder?
A compression lug like the ATL750-12 gives a permanent, tamper-free termination and does not need re-torquing, but it commits you to a hydraulic crimp tool and the correct die for the lug. A mechanical setscrew lug installs with a torque wrench and no crimper, and can be taken apart later, which is why it is often chosen for retrofit and service work. On new feeders and MV terminations where the connection will not be disturbed, compression is the usual call.
6) Is the ATL750-12 tin plated, and does that matter for landing aluminum on a copper bus?
Yes, it is a tin-plated aluminum lug (the TP in the description). The plating is what lets an aluminum lug bolt to a copper or plated bus bar without the dissimilar-metal corrosion you would get from bare aluminum on copper. Use a belleville washer and the joint hardware the gear manufacturer specifies.
7) Does the ATL750-12 come as a single lug or in a pack?
It is sold each, so for a three-phase-plus-neutral feeder termination you order the quantity of lugs you need rather than getting a kit. Bolts, washers and any insulating boot are separate items.
8) Where is the Blackburn ATL750-12 made, for buy-domestic or procurement paperwork?
Country of origin on the ATL750-12 is Mexico. If your project carries a Buy American or domestic-content requirement on electrical fittings, this part will not satisfy it.
