Generac 7681 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many watts does the Generac GP6500 model 7681 put out, and will it start a motor load?
The GP6500 (model 7681) is rated at 6500 running watts with 8125 starting watts. Generac's PowerRush technology bumps the current on demand when an electric motor kicks in, which is what lets a 6500 watt unit pick up a compressor, pump, or saw that would otherwise stall a similarly rated conventional set.
2) Is the Generac 7681 generator legal to sell in California?
No. The 7681 is not CARB compliant, so it is the 49-state and Canada version. If the job is in California you need the CARB compliant build of the GP6500 instead.
3) Is the Generac 7681 electric start or pull start?
Pull start only. There is no electric start or battery on the 7681, so plan on recoil starting it. Low oil level shutdown is built in to protect the engine if the oil drops while it is running.
4) Can one person move the Generac GP6500 around a job site?
It is portable but heavy. The unit weighs 172 lbs assembled and measures roughly 27.2 x 26.5 x 27 inches. Never-flat wheels and a fold-down handle come on it, so one person can roll it on reasonably flat ground, but two people are realistic for lifting it into a truck bed. Shipping weight runs 196 lbs.
5) How long will the Generac GP6500 run on a tank of gas?
Up to 11.5 hours at 50% load on the steel fuel tank, which has a built-in fuel gauge. It runs on gasoline with a 389 cc Generac OHV engine, splash lubricated. An hour meter on the panel tracks run time for oil change intervals, which is what most MRO crews use to schedule service.
6) Is the Generac 7681 an inverter generator or a conventional one?
Conventional, not an inverter. That means more output per dollar and a heavier frame, but not the clean sine wave or the quiet operation you would get from an inverter unit. For running tools, pumps, lighting, and job trailers it is the right type; for tight tolerance electronics an inverter generator is the better choice.
7) Does the Generac 7681 carry any safety listings for use on a commercial site?
The GP6500 7681 is CSA Certified and ETL Listed. It also carries a Prop 65 warning for carbon monoxide in the exhaust, so it has to be run outdoors and well away from intakes, windows, and occupied space.
8) Is the Generac GP6500 frame tough enough for daily job site use?
The cradle is hardened 1-1/4 inch steel tube, and the frame material is steel throughout. Finish is orange and black. It belongs to Generac's GP Series of portable units.
