FTG x P describes the two ends. The FTG (fitting) end on the 1 inch side is sized like copper tube, so it slips into the press socket of another 1 inch ProPress fitting instead of accepting tube itself. The P end is a 1/2 inch press socket that takes 1/2 inch copper tube. So the 78082 lets you step down from a 1 inch fitting directly to 1/2 inch tube with no extra coupling.
