Viega 79330 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What kind of connection does the Viega 79330 ProPress adapter make on each end?
The 79330 is a press-by-female-thread adapter: one end is a 1 inch ProPress socket that crimps onto copper tube, the other is a 1 inch FPT female pipe thread. Use it where you need to transition a pressed copper run into a male-threaded item such as a valve nipple, gauge, or a threaded appliance connection.
2) Is the Viega 79330 adapter 1 inch on both the press end and the thread end?
Both ends are 1 inch. The press socket takes 1 inch copper tube and the female thread is 1 inch FPT, so there is no size step in this fitting. If you need to change size at the transition, you need a different adapter or a separate reducing fitting.
3) Is the Viega 79330 ProPress adapter safe for potable drinking water lines?
It is made of zero lead bronze, which is the alloy Viega uses for its potable water ProPress fittings. That makes it suitable for domestic hot and cold water service as well as non-potable uses like hydronic heating.
4) What does Smart Connect technology do on a Viega ProPress fitting?
Smart Connect is Viega's unpressed-connection feature. An unpressed fitting deliberately leaks during pressure test so the installer finds it before the walls close up. On a job with dozens of joints it is how you catch the one you skipped, but it only helps if you pressure test the system before concealing it.
5) Do I need solder or pipe dope to install the Viega 79330?
No flame or solder on the press end. The 1 inch ProPress socket is crimped with a press tool and the correct 1 inch jaw, so the copper only needs to be cut square, deburred, and marked to depth. The FPT end is a conventional thread, so it still gets thread sealant or tape at the male fitting going into it.
6) Can I press the Viega 79330 onto steel or PEX instead of copper?
No. The press end on this bronze adapter is a ProPress copper socket and is meant for copper tube. Steel pipe takes a different press system, and PEX needs a PureFlow style connection, so neither substitutes here.
