Metallics RM89B – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Metallics RM89B 8-32 screw thread into a standard electrical box or device yoke?
The RM89B is an 8-32 machine screw with 32 threads per inch, which is the standard thread used on outlet boxes, device yokes, and fixture straps in US electrical work. At 2 inches long it is the extended length used when a device or fixture has to reach back through thick plaster rings, mud rings, or deep extension rings.
2) How much clearance does the round head need, and will it sit flush?
It will not sit flush. A round head stands proud by design: head height runs 0.107 to 0.12 in. and head diameter 0.287 to 0.309 in. If you need the screw buried in a countersunk hole or a flat surface, use a flat head machine screw instead of the RM89B.
3) How are the Metallics RM89B screws packaged and what is the minimum I can buy?
They ship in a box, with a minimum order of 4,000 pieces, sold each. That is a bulk MRO or jobsite quantity, not a handful for one device. If you need a small count, this is the wrong pack.
4) Do the Metallics RM89B machine screws qualify for a Buy American or ARRA funded job?
No. The RM89B is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. On a federally funded or domestic-content job, you will need a domestically sourced 8-32 machine screw instead.
5) What driver do I need for these combo head screws, flat blade or Phillips?
Either. The head is a combo drive, slotted and Phillips, so a #2 Phillips bit or a flat blade that fits a slot 0.045 to 0.054 in. wide and roughly 0.058 to 0.077 in. deep will both drive it. Handy on a panel job where the installer only has one driver on the belt.
6) Are these zinc screws suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
The RM89B is low carbon steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating is a mild corrosion coating meant for dry interior service, boxes, panels, enclosures. For wet, exterior, or corrosive locations, specify a stainless machine screw rather than steel zinc.
7) How strong are these 8-32 screws, and can I torque them down hard?
Tensile strength is 60,000 psi minimum with a hardness of Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. That is standard commercial machine screw strength, fine for devices, covers, straps, and enclosure hardware, but it is not a grade 5 or grade 8 structural fastener and should not be substituted for one.
8) Will a Phillips bit cam out on these screws?
The Phillips recess is held to 0.165 to 0.178 in. diameter, 0.075 to 0.101 in. deep, with a 0.03 in. recess width and gaging penetration of 0.064 to 0.090 in. A #2 Phillips bit seats to those dimensions. The combo slot also gives you a flat blade fallback if a recess does get chewed up during install.
9) Is RM89B the correct Metallics part number for an 8-32 x 2 in. round head combo screw?
Yes. RM89B is the Metallics part number in the RM series for the 8-32 x 2 in. round head combo machine screw in steel zinc. Metallics states other sizes and quantities are available by request.
