Southwire SPH8-06 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Southwire SPH8-06 SIMpull head fit?
The SPH8-06 pulling head is sized for 8 AWG conductor. Southwire builds the SIMpull head line in sizes 8 AWG through 2 AWG, so for larger conductors you need the matching head for that gauge rather than forcing this one onto heavier wire.
2) Will a SIMpull pulling head add enough bulk to jam a conduit sweep?
The SPH8-06 is built as the lowest profile head available in the SIMpull line, which is the whole point of it on tight raceway and offsets. The part itself measures 12.6 x 3.9 x 1.6 inches as packaged, and the staggered lengths of the heads let several conductors enter a bend without all the terminations bunching at the same point.
3) How many pulling heads come in a pack of the Southwire SPH8-06?
Five heads per inner pack, in cardboard packaging. That matters on a multi-conductor pull, since you need one head per conductor, so a single inner pack covers a typical three-phase plus neutral and ground run.
4) Why do SIMpull heads come in staggered lengths?
Staggered lengths stagger where each conductor's head sits in the bundle, so the heads do not stack up side by side and swell the pull diameter. On a multi-conductor pull through conduit that keeps the leading end slim and saves the time otherwise spent taping and tapering a hand-made head.
5) Is the Southwire SPH8-06 pulling head metal or plastic?
Steel, finished in silver. That is the load-bearing body a pulling rope or tape attaches to, so it is a steel part rather than a molded grip.
6) Is the SPH8-06 pulling head meant for commercial work or residential?
Southwire classes the SPH8-06 as a commercial item. It is aimed at conduit pulls on commercial and industrial jobs where 8 AWG and larger feeders are run in raceway, not at residential NM cable work.
7) How much does one SPH8-06 pulling head weigh?
0.281 lb per head, so even five of them in an inner pack is negligible weight in a van or a tool bag.
