Metallics JTS48 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a Type A tapping screw used for, and is the Metallics JTS48 right for sheet metal?
Type A is the sharp gimlet point tapping screw, and that is what the JTS48 is. The gimlet point starts its own hole in thin sheet metal, so it is the screw you reach for on sheet metal boxes, duct, strut accessories and similar light-gauge work rather than into solid steel. Metallics lists it specifically for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades. Thread pitch is 15 threads per inch to the ASME B18.6.4 thread standard. For thicker stock or a pre-drilled hole you want a blunt-point Type B or a self-drilling screw instead.
2) Do Metallics JTS48 screws qualify for a Buy American or ARRA federal job?
No. The JTS48 is not Buy American compliant and not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic-sourcing clause, this screw will not satisfy it.
3) Is 1-3/4 inches of screw length too long for mounting a device to a sheet metal box?
Probably, yes. At #8 by 1-3/4 inch the JTS48 is a long tapping screw, meant for reaching through standoffs, insulation, furring or stacked brackets into the sheet metal behind. For shallow sheet metal work the point will protrude well past the far side. Same head, drive and point type are offered in other lengths in the Metallics JTS series, so size the length to your stack-up rather than trimming the screw.
4) What driver bit do I need for the Metallics JTS48 pan head screws?
A #2 Phillips bit. The recess is a Phillips drive with a 0.169 to 0.182 inch recess diameter and 0.108 inch recess depth, which is what a #2 point is sized for. Run a #1 and you will cam out and chew the recess.
5) How much does the pan head on a #8 Metallics tapping screw stick up, and will it clear a cover plate?
The pan head measures 0.306 to 0.322 inch across and 0.105 to 0.115 inch high, built to ASME B18.6.3-2013 head dimensions. That is a low, broad head with no countersink, so it sits proud by roughly a tenth of an inch. Fine under most device plates and brackets, but if you need the head flush in the material you want a flat head screw, not this pan head.
6) How many Metallics JTS48 screws come in a jar?
JTS48 ships as a jar of 100 screws, and 100 is the order minimum. Metallics notes other sizes and quantities are available by request.
7) Will these zinc tapping screws hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The JTS48 is steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles indoor and damp-but-sheltered conditions, which covers most panel, box and duct work, but it is not a marine or sustained-wet coating. For direct weather exposure or wash-down areas, step up to a stainless fastener.
