Metallics JDS153 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 1/4 inch hex driver fit the Metallics JDS153 tapping screw, or do I need a nut setter?
The JDS153 has an indented hex head measuring 0.244 to 0.250 inch across the flats, so a standard 1/4 inch nut setter drives it. Width across corners is 0.272 inch. It is also slotted, so a flat blade works when you cannot get a driver square to the work.
2) Do I need to pre-drill for these #8 x 3/4 in. sheet metal screws?
The JDS153 is a Type A tapping screw with a gimlet (sharp) point, which pierces and forms its own thread in thin sheet. In light gauge sheet metal, outlet boxes and metal framing you can usually drive it without a pilot hole; in heavier stock, a pilot sized to the thread root is still the right practice. Thread count is 15 per inch to ASME B18.6.4.
3) Are Metallics JDS153 screws Buy American or ARRA compliant for a federal job?
No. The JDS153 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant; country of origin is listed as multiple. If your contract carries domestic sourcing requirements, this is not the fastener for it.
4) What are these indented hex head tapping screws actually used for on an electrical job?
Light metal assembly: electrical outlet and device boxes, metal framing, and general sheet metal work. The #8 diameter at 3/4 inch length with a sharp gimlet point is the size most electricians keep on the truck for tying boxes, straps and plates to light gauge steel.
5) Are the Metallics JDS153 screws sold individually or in a pack?
They come in a jar of 100, which is the order minimum. The jar weighs 0.45 lbs.
6) Is zinc plated steel good enough for these screws outdoors or in a damp location?
The JDS153 is AISI 1016-1024 carbon steel with a zinc plating. That is corrosion protection for dry interior and protected locations, which is what the screw is specified for (outlet boxes, framing, sheet metal). For wet, exterior or corrosive environments, specify a stainless or heavier-coated fastener instead.
7) Will these screws snap when I run them in with an impact driver?
Minimum torsional strength is 39 lb-in, with case hardness at Rockwell C28-38. That is enough for driving into light gauge sheet, but an impact driver will overrun it easily. Use a clutched screwgun or a drill on low torque and stop as the head seats.
8) What standard do these tapping screws conform to for a submittal?
Dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010 and the thread conforms to ASME B18.6.4. Material is AISI 1016-1024 steel. One note for spec work: dimensions for #9 diameter screws in this family are independent of ASME B18.6.4, though that does not affect the #8 JDS153.
9) Does the JDS153 have a built-in washer face, and how much does the head actually cover?
Yes, the indented hex head carries a washer with an outside diameter of 0.322 to 0.348 inch and a washer thickness of 0.019 to 0.031 inch. Head height runs 0.096 to 0.110 inch. That gives you a little more bearing surface than a plain hex head, which helps when you are pulling down a thin plate or strap.
10) Can I get this indented hex head slotted tapping screw in other lengths or diameters?
Yes. The Metallics JDS series covers other sizes and quantities by request beyond the #8 x 3/4 in. JDS153. Give the diameter and length you need and the jar count.
