Sharp point is the right pick for light gauge material, wood, and plastic anchors; it starts on its own without a pilot. For heavier gauge steel framing or strut, a self-drilling (self-tapping drill point) screw is the better choice because a sharp point will walk or strip before it bites. The JRWS8V is a #8 diameter, 3/4 inch long sharp point tapping screw.

The JRWS8V takes either a Phillips bit or a square (Robertson) bit, since it is a combo drive head. Most crews run a #2 square bit for better bit retention when driving overhead, but a #2 Phillips works on the same screw. Handy when your drivers are already loaded for one or the other.

The round washer head gives a wider bearing surface than a pan head, so it spreads clamp load and will not pull through thin sheet metal, box ears, or plastic brackets. That is why the JRWS8V head type is listed as Round Washer. If you need the head to sit flush in a countersunk hole, this is the wrong profile, go to a flat or bugle head instead.

Zinc plated steel is the material, which is a mild indoor corrosion coating. It is fine for dry interior work, in-building electrical, panels, and framing. For exterior, damp, or coastal exposure, specify stainless or a hot dip galvanized fastener instead; zinc plating will bloom and rust in standing moisture.

No pilot needed in light material. Sharp point tapping screws form their own thread as they drive. In harder or thicker stock a small pilot keeps the #8 shank from splitting the material, but for sheet metal, plastic, and typical framing you can drive the JRWS8V straight in.
