Metallics WDS2M – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Why use a wafer head screw instead of a bugle head on metal framing?
The wafer head is a wide, low-profile pan that bears on the surface rather than countersinking itself into paper face. Head width runs 0.359 to 0.38 inch with a head thickness of 0.025 to 0.035 inch, so it spreads load across thin material and sits nearly flush. That is what you want when fastening metal to metal, hanging strap, clips, or light panel work. If you are setting gypsum board on studs and need the head buried below the face for taping, a bugle head is the better choice.
2) Is a 3/4 inch screw long enough for my application?
At 3/4 inch overall with 18 threads per inch, the WDS2M is a short fastener meant for thin stack-ups: metal to metal joints where the combined material stays inside the 0.100 to 0.350 inch panel range. If you are going through a layer of gypsum board plus stud, or any assembly thicker than that, this length will not reach enough thread and you need a longer screw in the same WDS series.
3) Do Metallics WDS2M screws qualify for a Buy American or ARRA federal job?
No. The WDS2M is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. On a federally funded project with domestic sourcing requirements, you will need a domestically produced fastener.
4) What size driver bit do I need for the WDS2M wafer head screws?
A #2 Phillips. The recess is 0.176 to 0.189 inch in diameter and 0.255 inch deep, which is standard #2 Phillips geometry. A power bit ships with the box, so you are not buying one separately for the first run.
5) How strong are these screws, and will they snap in an impact driver?
Minimum torsional strength is 42 lb-in, with the steel case hardened to Rockwell C32-40 and made from AISI 1016-1024 carbon steel. That hardness is what lets the point drill steel without rolling over. Drive them with a screw gun set to a clutch rather than leaning on a high-torque impact, since 42 lb-in is the floor the screw is qualified to, not a target to beat.
6) Are these zinc screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The WDS2M is carbon steel with a zinc finish, which is an interior-grade coating. It holds up fine in conditioned electrical, plumbing and HVAC work. For exterior exposure, wet wells, or corrosive environments, specify a stainless self-drilling screw instead.
7) What thread standard do these Metallics self-drilling screws meet?
Threads are cut to SAE J78-2013, the standard covering steel self-drilling tapping screws, at 18 threads per inch in a UNF pitch. If your submittal calls out SAE J78 self-drillers, the WDS2M meets that callout.
8) How much does a box of 1000 WDS2M screws weigh for shipping?
A box comes in at 4.85 lbs, with box dimensions of 3.5 x 3.5 x 5.75 inches. Easy to stage on a cart or drop in a gang box.
