1) Can I use the Viega 84105 MegaPress cap on copper or PEX?
No. The 84105 is a carbon steel MegaPress fitting, made for carbon steel pipe systems. Copper lines need a copper press fitting and PEX needs a PEX system; the sealing element and jaw profile are not interchangeable.
2) I need to cap a dead leg on a black iron gas or water line without hot work. Will this work?
That is the normal use for a carbon steel MegaPress cap. The 84105 presses onto a 3/4 inch carbon steel pipe end cold, so there is no torch, no welding permit and no need to thread the pipe in place. The pipe end still has to be cut square, deburred and clean, and the correct press jaw used.
3) Is the Viega 84105 a threaded or press connection cap?
It is a press connection. The 84105 MegaPress cap slips over the prepared pipe end and is secured with a press tool and the matching jaw, so no threading, soldering or welding is involved.
4) What does Smart Connect technology do on a MegaPress cap?
Smart Connect is Viega's unpressed-connection feature: before pressing, the sealing element deliberately leaks during pressure testing so an installer can spot a fitting that was missed on a run. Once pressed, the 84105 seals normally. It is a jobsite verification aid, not a substitute for a proper press.
5) Do I need a sealing O-ring or anything else with the Viega 84105 cap?
The cap ships as a complete press fitting with its sealing element installed, so nothing extra is ordered with it. What you supply is the press tool and the 3/4 inch MegaPress jaw.
