You press the fitting onto 1 inch black iron or carbon steel pipe and thread the other side into a female NPT port, so it is the transition piece between a pressed run and threaded equipment, valves, or unions.
2) Can I use a MegaPress carbon steel adapter on copper or PEX?
No. The 84255 is carbon steel and its press end is made for iron pipe size black or carbon steel pipe. Copper tube and PEX need a different Viega system (ProPress for copper, PureFlow for PEX); pressing a MegaPress fitting on them will not give a sealed joint.
