1) What size cable will the IDEAL 35-052 cable cutter actually cut?
The IDEAL 35-052 is rated to cut up to 2/0 copper and 4/0 aluminum. If you're working heavier feeders than that, step up to a larger cutter. It will not handle ACSR (aluminum conductor steel reinforced) messenger or overhead line, the steel core will wreck the edges.
2) Can I use these cutters on steel-reinforced overhead wire or guy wire?
No. The 35-052 is specifically not for use on ACSR, and the same logic rules out guy wire and other steel-cored strand. These edges are ground for copper and aluminum conductor only; use a dedicated ACSR or cable/wire rope cutter for steel.
3) Will the IDEAL 35-052 crush or flatten the conductor when I cut it?
No. The cutting edges are precision-ground and hardened so the cut comes off clean without distorting the cable, which matters when the end has to go straight into a lug, compression connector, or set-screw terminal without re-dressing the strands.
4) Are these cable cutters insulated for live work?
The 35-052 has a dipped grip, which is comfort and grip only, not an insulated rated tool. Treat it as a standard hand cutter and work de-energized. For live work you need a tool marked 1000V rated/VDE tested.
5) Is a 9-1/2 inch cable cutter big enough for panel and service work, or do I need a longer handle?
At 9-1/2 inches overall, the 35-052 is a one- or two-hand shear sized for branch and feeder conductor up to 2/0 copper and 4/0 aluminum, which covers most panel, gutter, and j-box work. Above those sizes the leverage runs out and you want a long-handle or ratcheting cutter instead.

Drop-forged high-carbon steel, with the cutting edges hardened and precision-ground. Drop forging is what lets a 9-1/2 inch tool take repeated full-capacity cuts without the jaws spreading.
