P x FTG means one end is a press socket and the other is a street (fitting) end. The socket end presses onto 1-1/4 inch pipe, and the FTG end is sized to slip into the press socket of another 1-1/4 inch MegaPress fitting. That lets you change direction right at a fitting without adding a short nipple between the two.

MegaPress fittings press onto black iron and carbon steel pipe, not copper tube. The 90900 is built in 316 stainless steel and takes 1-1/4 inch pipe on the press end. If you are working in copper, you need a ProPress copper or stainless fitting instead.

The street configuration saves you a joint. With a press socket on one end and a fitting end on the other, the 90900 goes straight into the next MegaPress socket, so you eliminate the short pipe nipple and one press connection. Fewer joints means less crimping time and fewer places to leak, which matters in tight mechanical rooms where the 5.461 inch overall length is already most of the space you have.

Smart Connect is Viega's unpressed-joint feature. The sealing element is shaped so an unpressed fitting weeps visibly during pressure testing, which lets you find a missed crimp before the system is closed up and insulated. It is built into the 90900 elbow, not an option you specify.

316 stainless press fittings are routinely used on carbon and black steel pipe systems, and the stainless body is the reason the fitting holds up in wet or corrosive service better than a carbon steel one. 316 is the higher-alloy grade with molybdenum, so it resists chlorides and pitting. For normal closed hydronic, compressed air, gas and fire protection steel systems the stainless fitting on steel pipe is standard practice.

Yes. A press fitting is not threaded or soldered, so you need a press tool with the correct MegaPress jaw or ring for 1-1/4 inch. You also still need to cut the pipe square and deburr it, and mark the insertion depth so you can confirm the pipe is fully seated before pressing. No threading machine, no torch, no pipe dope.
