Altronix AL201UL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the AL201UL power supply include a battery charger for standby power?
Yes, charging is built in. The AL201UL is a power supply/charger, so it maintains a standby battery in the enclosure rather than needing a separate charging board. The battery itself is a separate purchase.
2) Is the Altronix AL201UL a 24VDC supply, or 12VDC only?
It is 12VDC only. The 24VAC in the description refers to the transformer input side; the DC output is 12VDC at 1.75A with no field-selectable 24V setting. For a dual-voltage board, look at the SDC 631 Series (1.5A regulated DC with dual voltage selection) or the Von Duprin PS902, which is field selectable 12/24VDC at 2A.
3) I need more than 1.75 amps at 12VDC - what should I use instead of the AL201UL?
For a larger 12VDC load, step up to the Securitron AQS1210, a 12VDC 10 amp switching supply, or the Securitron AQL4 at 12/24VDC 4/3 amp. The SDC 634 Series offers 4 amps regulated and filtered with dual voltage selection, and the SDC 632 Series 2 amps. The AL201UL itself is rated 12VDC at 1.75A, so any of these covers a load the AL201UL cannot.
4) The AL201UL only has one output - what do I use if I need to power several doors from one box?
The AL201UL includes a single Class 2 output. For multiple loads, the RCI DKPS-2A provides 8 outputs at 12/24VDC and 2A, and the BEST PS161-6 is a 120V input, 12/24V output supply with 6A capacity intended for delayed egress exit devices. Both distribute to several devices from one enclosure rather than feeding one circuit.
5) I need 24VDC, not 12VDC - what replaces the AL201UL?
The AL201UL output is 12VDC. For a 24VDC load, the Command Access PS1 Series is a 24VDC linear supply with 1 amp output, the PS210 is a UL 6E/CSA linear supply at 1.5A 24VDC with boost circuitry, and the PS204/204B provides 2A at 24VDC with battery backup. Dual voltage alternatives include the SDC 631 Series at 1.5 amps with dual voltage selection and the Von Duprin PS902 at 2A, 12/24VDC field selectable.
6) Is the AL201UL output Class 2 or non-power-limited?
Single Class 2 output. That matters for how you run the wiring, since Class 2 low-voltage cable and separation rules apply rather than the heavier requirements for non-power-limited circuits. If your job calls for non-power-limited outputs, this is the wrong board.
7) What is a good alternative if 1.75A is not enough for my door group?
For a larger load, the SDC 632 Series gives 2 amps and the SDC 634 Series gives 4 amps, both with dual voltage selection. The Securitron AQL4 is a switching supply at 12/24VDC, 4A/3A, and the BEST PS161-6 runs 120V in with 12/24V out at 6A. Pick the amperage after you total the holding current of every lock plus the charging draw.
8) Is the ROFU 9126T a substitute for the Altronix AL201UL?
They are not interchangeable in most installs. The ROFU 9126T is a plug-in mini power supply, 12VDC at 1.5A with a time delay, so it plugs into a receptacle and adds timed release. The AL201UL runs from a 120V input, is supplied in a grey enclosure with an integral charger for standby batteries, and has no time delay function.
9) If my access control job needs logic or controller functions, is the AL201UL enough?
The AL201UL converts a low voltage input into a 12VDC output and charges a standby battery; it is power only. If the opening needs sequencing or logic, the Detex 10-800 Series is a universal logic controller with a 120VAC/24VDC power supply and battery backup, and the BEST ELR150 Series is a power supply control module for electronic access control.
10) Is there an alternative to the AL201UL where no 120V branch circuit is available?
Yes. The AL201UL is a 120V input unit. Where no AC feed exists, the Securitron BPSS is a boxed solar power supply, and for bench or field testing the Command Access CAT Field Tester is a portable 12-24VDC supply that runs from DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee batteries.
11) For an Aiphone access control kit, should I order the AL201UL or the Aiphone supply?
The Aiphone AC-PS1250 is a UL listed 12VDC 5A supply made for the AC Series access control kits, so it is the matched part for those kits. The AL201UL is a general purpose 12VDC 1.75A supply with an enclosure and charger and is not kit specific.
12) Is this Altronix power supply suitable for a commercial access control installation?
Yes, the AL201UL is a commercial-duty unit for electronic access control, powering 12VDC devices such as electric strikes, maglocks, readers and controllers from a low voltage input.
