Altronix AL400ULM – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many devices can I run off an Altronix AL400ULM, and how is each one protected?
The AL400ULM breaks its output into five individually protected Class 2 power limited outputs, each on a PTC (self-resetting) fuse rather than a glass fuse. That means a short on one strike or maglock trips only that output, and it restores itself once the fault is cleared, so there is nothing to replace in the can. Five outputs covers a typical small opening group: a couple of electric strikes, a maglock, a reader, and a request-to-exit device.
2) Is the Altronix AL400ULM 12 volt or 24 volt?
Both, selectable. The board converts a 115VAC 60Hz input into either 12VDC or 24VDC at the outputs, so one part number covers 12V strikes and 24V maglocks. You pick the voltage at install, and it applies to the whole unit, not per output, so mixed 12V and 24V hardware on the same opening group needs two supplies.
3) How much current does the AL400ULM deliver at 12VDC?
4 amps at 12VDC, shared across the five outputs. Add up the holding current of everything you are feeding, not the inrush, and leave headroom: two 24V maglocks at roughly half an amp each plus readers is comfortable, but a motorized latch retraction exit device draws far more on retract and generally wants a dedicated MLR supply such as the BEST RPSMLR2.
4) I only need to power one electric strike - is there a smaller alternative to the AL400ULM?
Yes. The AL400ULM is built for multi-device systems, converting 115VAC into five individually protected Class 2 power-limited 12VDC or 24VDC outputs. For a single strike or lock, single-output supplies include the Command Access PS1 Series at 1 Amp 24VDC, the SDC 620 Series 1 Amp regulated and filtered supply with dual voltage selection, the Securitron AQD1 switching supply at 12/24 VDC 1 Amp, and the Adams Rite PS-1 regulated supply at 1 Amp 12/24 volts DC with battery backup. Size the supply to the total inrush and holding current of the device you are feeding.
5) My access control panel needs more than five powered outputs - what should I use instead of the AL400ULM?
The AL400ULM provides five individually protected PTC Class 2 power-limited outputs. If you need more drops, the RCI DKPS-2A offers 8 outputs at 12/24VDC at 2A for access control systems. Note the tradeoff: the DKPS-2A is rated 2A total output where the AL400ULM is rated 4A at 12VDC or 3A at 24VDC, so more outputs does not necessarily mean more current to divide among them.
6) Does the AL400ULM come with a battery, or just the charger?
A charger circuit is built in and the unit ships in its grey enclosure, but standby batteries are a separate order. You supply two sealed lead acid batteries sized to the standby time your AHJ wants, and the enclosure is the mounting point for them. Plan on ordering batteries and any distribution or relay module at the same time so the can gets wired out in one trip.
7) What input power do I need to land at the AL400ULM, and can it run on 220V?
It is a 120V nominal device, wired for a 115VAC 60Hz feed drawing up to 3.5A. That is a standard North American circuit. There is no dual-voltage input, so a 220/240V 50Hz installation needs a different model or a step-down transformer ahead of it. Run the AC in on its own dedicated circuit where the access control spec calls for one.
8) What is the difference between the Altronix AL400ULM and a small 1 or 2 amp access control power supply?
Capacity and distribution. The AL400ULM is a 4A supply with five separately protected Class 2 outputs and an onboard charger, so it feeds a group of openings from one can. Single-door jobs are usually better served by something like the Securitron AQD1 at 1 amp, the Command Access PS1 at 1 amp 24VDC, or the Von Duprin PS902 at 2A field selectable 12/24VDC. Step up instead if you need more current: the Securitron AQS1210 is 12VDC at 10 amps.
9) Can I use the AL400ULM to power maglocks that have to drop on a fire alarm?
Yes, that is the normal application for this unit. The five outputs are Class 2 power limited, which is what a maglock circuit on a life-safety interlock is typically wired as, and the supply is built to drop its output when the alarm interface opens. Wire the fire alarm contact per your AHJ and confirm the drop with the panel in test mode before you close the can. If you need logic beyond a simple drop, such as delayed egress timing, a controller like the Detex 10-800 handles that side.
10) What else do I need to order to finish an access control power install with the AL400ULM?
Out of the box you get the grey enclosure, the charger board, and the five PTC Class 2 outputs. Everything else is job-specific: standby batteries, the fire alarm interface wiring, and any door-side hardware. If power has to cross from frame to door leaf, you also need a transfer device such as the ROFU 10305-LA power transfer hinge, rated 1.5A at 42V. Add a relay or timer module if the opening needs a time delay on release.
11) Will the AL400ULM run a motorized latch retraction exit device, or do I need a different supply?
Motorized latch retraction devices draw a high inrush at actuation and are normally fed by a supply built for that duty. The BEST RPSMLR2 Series is a power supply specifically for motorized latch retraction exit devices, and the BEST ELR150 Series is a power supply control module for electronic access control. The AL400ULM is a general access control supply rated 12VDC at 4A or 24VDC at 3A across five PTC Class 2 power-limited outputs - confirm the MLR device's inrush spec against that rating before pairing them.
12) I need battery backup with my access control power supply - which options besides the AL400ULM include it?
The Altronix AL400ULM includes a charger in the enclosure, so standby batteries can be added to the unit. Comparable supplies that call out backup include the Adams Rite PS-1, a 1 Amp 12/24 volts DC regulated supply with battery backup; the Command Access PS204/204B, a linear supply with 2A at 24VDC and battery backup; and the Detex 10-800 Series universal logic controller with a 120VAC/24VDC power supply and battery backup. The AL400ULM is the higher-current of the group at 12VDC 4A or 24VDC 3A.
13) For a mid-size job needing about 1.5 to 2 amps, what are the alternatives to the AL400ULM?
If the load does not justify the AL400ULM's 12VDC 4A / 24VDC 3A capacity, the SDC 631 Series is a 1.5 Amp regulated and filtered DC power controller with dual voltage selection, the SDC 632 Series is a 2 Amp regulated and filtered supply with dual voltage selection, the Command Access PS210 is a UL 6E/CSA linear supply with 1.5A at 24VDC and boost circuitry, and the Command Access PS204/204B is a linear supply with 2A at 24VDC. The PS210 and PS204/204B are 24VDC units, while the SDC 631 and 632 offer dual voltage selection like the AL400ULM.
14) Is the Altronix AL400ULM suitable for a commercial building, or is it a residential unit?
It is a commercial-duty access power controller with a wall-mount steel enclosure, meant for electronic access control in the same class of job as a Securitron AQL4 or an RCI DKPS-2A. Property managers standardizing a multi-family or office portfolio can use the same 4A unit across risers and keep one spare on the shelf for the whole site.
15) Which power supplies come with an enclosure like the Altronix AL400ULM?
The AL400ULM ships in a grey enclosure with the charger and five PTC Class 2 outputs inside. Among comparable units, the Locknetics LP Series 150 and 250 Amp power supply is also supplied with an enclosure, and the Securitron BPSS is a boxed solar power supply. By contrast, the ROFU 9126T is a plug-in mini supply and the BEST ELR150 is a control module, neither of which is described as a boxed wall-mount unit.
