American Standard R701 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the American Standard R701 rough-in valve come with a handle?
No handle is included. The R701 is the rough-in valve body only, and the handle must be ordered separately. American Standard offers a range of ADA approved handles that mount to it, so plan on specifying the trim as a second line item or the installer will have a valve in the wall with nothing to operate it.
2) Is the R701 a mixing valve or just a shutoff?
It is an on/off control valve, not a mixing or pressure balancing valve. One inlet, one outlet, flow on or off. If you need tempered water from hot and cold supplies, this is the wrong valve type and you want a mixing or thermostatic rough-in instead.
3) What size supply line does the American Standard R701 on/off control valve take?
It is a 1/2 inch (13 mm) valve, so it ties into standard 1/2 inch water supply piping.
4) Will the R701 valve hold up in a high-traffic commercial restroom?
The body is cast brass and the valving is ceramic disc, which American Standard specifies for high use applications with prolonged water use. That combination is what you want in a school, stadium or healthcare restroom where the control gets operated constantly; the ceramic discs are what keep it from weeping at the stem over time.
5) Is the R701 the same as the American Standard R711?
They are closely related on/off control rough-ins and American Standard documents them together, but they are separate part numbers. Order by the exact number: R701 is the one covered here. If your drawing or the existing wall rough-in calls for R711, specify R711 rather than assuming the two interchange.
6) Where is the American Standard R701 valve manufactured?
Country of origin is Mexico. Worth noting for government or institutional jobs with domestic sourcing language in the spec.
