1) Does the American Standard R433S diverter valve come with the handle and trim plate?
No. The R433S is the in-wall rough-in valve body only. Trim, including the handle and escutcheon, has to be ordered as a separate item, and American Standard offers a range of ADA approved trim options for it. Plan on two line items for a complete shower control.
2) What does a 3-way diverter valve actually do in a shower?
It routes the water between three outlets, such as a showerhead, a handshower, and body sprays. The R433S handles three discrete functions, meaning one outlet at a time, and it also allows shared flow between shower outlets so more than one can run together. That is the difference between a simple two-way diverter and this valve.
3) Is this diverter a pressure balance or thermostatic valve that controls temperature?
Neither. The R433S is a diverter only, it directs water to whichever outlet you select. Temperature and volume control still come from a separate shower valve upstream of it, so a multi-function shower using this part needs both valves roughed in.
