American Standard 4188B005.020 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the American Standard Cadet PRO 4188B005 tank work with a 12-inch rough-in?
No. The Cadet PRO 4188B005 is built for a 10-inch rough-in, meaning 10 inches (254 mm) from the finished wall to the center of the closet flange. On a 12-inch rough the tank will sit about two inches off the wall and the bowl bolt pattern won't line up. You need the matching 10-inch rough bowl, or a 12-inch rough tank if your drain is set at 12.
2) What does "right hand trip lever" mean on this Cadet PRO tank, and can I move the handle to the left?
Right hand means the flush handle is mounted on the right side of the tank front as you face the toilet. The china is drilled on that side only, so the handle position is fixed. If your existing toilet flushes from the left, you want the left hand version instead of the 4188B005.
3) Is the 4188B005 a complete toilet or just the tank?
Tank only. The 4188B005 is the Cadet PRO tank in white vitreous china with the trip lever, fill valve and 3-inch flush valve already in it. The bowl, seat, wax ring and closet bolts are separate. Order the matching 10-inch rough Cadet PRO bowl to complete the fixture.
4) How much water does the Cadet PRO tank use per flush, and will it clear a full load?
1.6 gallons per flush (6.0 Lpf), and it carries a 1,000 gram MaP score at that volume, which is the top of the MaP test scale for solid waste removal. The 3-inch flush valve is what moves that water fast enough. For apartment turns and high-use restrooms that MaP number is the spec that matters more than the gallons.
5) Will a standard 2-inch flapper fit this American Standard tank?
No. The Cadet PRO tank uses a 3-inch flush valve, so it takes a 3-inch flapper. A 2-inch flapper off the shelf will not seal it. Keep 3-inch flappers on the parts cart if you're maintaining these across a property.
6) Are the trip lever and fill valve on the Cadet PRO metal or plastic?
Metal on both counts. The trip lever is metal with a chrome finish handle, and the fill valve has a metal shank rather than a plastic one. That's the difference maintenance crews notice first, since plastic levers and shanks are the usual failure point in rental units.
7) What color is the 4188B005 tank and will it match my existing Cadet bowl?
White is the only finish it comes in, under part number 4188B005.020, the .020 suffix being American Standard's white code. It's part of the Cadet family, so it matches a white Cadet bowl of the same 10-inch rough. Colored or bone bowls will not match.
8) Is the Cadet PRO tank meant for residential or commercial use?
American Standard classifies it as residential. It's the trade version of the Cadet tank, so it's common in multi-family and rental turnovers, but for heavy public restroom traffic you'd normally spec a flushometer bowl instead of a tank type.
