American Standard RU102SS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the American Standard RU102SS Flash rough-in valve come with the cartridge and trim?
No. The RU102SS ships as the valve body only, with a test cap and plaster guard in place. The cartridge ships with the trim kit, so you need to order the Flash trim separately to finish the job. That is normal for this valve: the body goes in at rough-in, the cartridge and escutcheon go on at final.
2) What pipe connection does the RU102SS shower valve use, and can I press-fit it?
It has 1/2 inch stub-out inlets and outlets sized to accept 1/2 inch press-fit fittings. The stub-outs are made specifically for press-connect, so a crimp ring on 1/2 inch copper goes straight onto the stubs with no adapters or sweating at the valve.
3) How deep can the valve sit behind the finished wall?
The rough-in range runs 1-3/4 inch to 2-3/4 inch from the finished wall to the back of the valve. That one inch of tolerance covers most tile-over-backer and drywall build-ups, and the plaster guard acts as the depth guide while you set it.
4) Can I pressure test the lines before the cartridge is installed?
Yes, and that is the point of the flush plug. You leave the cartridge out, test with air at 200 psi or water at 300 psi, and flush the lines without cross flow between hot and cold. No need to pull a cartridge in and out just to test.
5) Does this valve have built-in stops so I can service the shower without shutting off the building?
Yes. The RU102SS includes screwdriver stops on the inlets, so a maintenance tech can isolate that one shower at the valve and change the cartridge without killing water to the rest of the unit or the riser. For property managers and multi-family MRO, that is the version you want over a stop-less body.
6) My hot and cold supplies come in reversed. Can I still use this rough-in valve?
Yes. The body has back-to-back capability, so hot and cold can be reversed quickly during installation. That is what makes it workable in back-to-back bathroom stacks where the plumbing mirrors from one unit to the next.
7) How does the valve mount to the cross brace in a stud bay?
The body has a flat back so it seats flush against a wood cross brace and screws up solid with no rocking. On thin-wall installations the plaster guard itself can carry the mounting support. Combined with the stainless steel retaining ring, you do not need screws to hold the test cap or cartridge in place.
8) Is this shower valve body brass, and will it hold up in hard or high-chloride water?
The body is cast DZR (dezincification resistant) brass, chosen to resist corrosion in water with high chloride and high pH. That matters on coastal and well-water systems where standard yellow brass suffers dezincification and pinholes over time.
9) Is the retaining ring easy to get loose during finish-out?
The stainless retaining ring has flats machined on it, so it loosens with a wrench rather than fighting a smooth ring. Test cap comes out and the cartridge drops in at trim-out without hunting for screws.
