A clinic service sink is a flushing-rim fixture for emptying bedpans, urinals, and other liquid waste in healthcare settings. The American Standard 9504999 uses siphon jet flushing action, so the bowl clears like a water closet rather than just draining like a floor-mounted mop basin. That flushing rim is what makes it a clinic sink: waste gets flushed and the rim rinses down after each use. If you only need to fill and dump buckets in a janitor closet, a mop service basin is the right fixture instead.

It has a 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) top spud, so it takes a 1-1/2 inch top-spud flushometer. The valve is not part of the fixture, so order the flush valve separately and confirm it is a 1-1/2 inch top spud connection.

Floor mount. The 9504999 sets on the floor over the waste outlet, which means you need floor rough-in rather than a wall carrier. An optional pedestal base is available if you want the fixture raised.

Plan on a 1-1/2 inch top-spud flushometer, and decide on the two factory options: the pedestal base and the rim guards. Rim guards protect the china edge where bedpans get knocked against it, which is worth specifying in a high-traffic nursing unit. None of those are included with the fixture itself.

Vitreous china. It is the standard material for this class of fixture in healthcare: non-porous, glazed, and cleanable with hospital disinfectants, which is why clinic sinks are specified in china rather than stainless or molded stone. Because it is china, the rim is the vulnerable spot, and that is what the optional rim guards address.
