American Standard M970551-2430A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the American Standard M970551 knob kit fit any tub filler, or only certain models?
The M970551 knob kit is made for the American Standard Studio S tub filler. It's a model-specific handle, so it isn't a universal replacement knob for other American Standard faucet lines or other brands. Confirm the valve you're working on is a Studio S tub filler before ordering.
2) What comes in the American Standard knob kit M970551, or do I need a set screw separately?
Everything needed to mount the handle is in the kit: one knob, one set screw, and one 2.5 mm hex wrench. No separate fastener or tool purchase is required to swap a damaged knob.
3) What finishes does the American Standard M970551 Studio S knob come in?
Three finishes, each its own part number: chrome (M970551-0020A), matte black (M970551-2430A), and brushed nickel (M970551-2950A). Match the suffix to the rest of the trim on the tub filler so the replacement knob doesn't stand out against the spout.
4) Is this Studio S handle metal or plastic? I manage apartments and plastic handles keep breaking.
Brass construction, not plastic. For a rental or hospitality bath where handles get grabbed hard and turned wet, that's the difference between a repeat service call and a one-time repair. It's a handle-only kit, so it fixes a broken or stripped knob without touching the valve body.
5) I need one knob but my tub filler has two handles. Does the M970551 kit cover both?
Each kit contains a single knob with its set screw and wrench. If you're replacing both hot and cold knobs on a Studio S tub filler, order two kits in the same finish.
6) Do I have to shut off the water or pull the valve to change this knob?
No valve work is involved. The kit is a trim-side handle held by a set screw, backed out with the included 2.5 mm hex wrench, so the knob comes off and the new one goes on without disturbing the cartridge or the supply. Keep the hex wrench for future service; 2.5 mm is a size that walks off a truck fast.
