American Standard 1660190.243 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the American Standard Rain ceiling mount shower arm work with any rain showerhead?
It terminates in a standard 1/2-inch NPT thread, so it mates with any showerhead cut for 1/2-inch NPT, which covers most rain heads regardless of brand. The showerhead itself is a separate purchase, this is the drop arm and ceiling flange only.
2) What size hole does the ceiling flange cover on this American Standard Rain arm?
The escutcheon is a 2 1/2-inch ceiling flange, so it will conceal the pipe penetration up to roughly that diameter. Anything larger than 2 1/2 inches needs to be patched before the flange goes on.
3) Is this shower arm solid brass or plated plastic?
Brass construction throughout, which is what you want on a wetted fitting that carries the weight of a rain head. It weighs 0.661 pounds.
4) What finishes does the American Standard Rain 12-inch ceiling shower arm come in?
Six finishes: Chrome (1660190.002), Polished Nickel (1660190.013), Matte Black (1660190.243), Legacy Bronze (1660190.278), Brushed Nickel (1660190.295), and Brushed Cool Sunrise (1660190.GN0). If you are matching an existing American Standard trim package across units, order by that suffix rather than by finish name.
5) Should I use a ceiling mount arm or a wall mount shower arm for a rain head?
A ceiling drop like this Rain 12-inch arm puts the rain head directly overhead and centered in the stall, which is what most rain showerheads are designed for. Go wall mount if you have no accessible ceiling cavity to run and support the supply, since this one requires a vertical stub down through the ceiling. It is an extendable arm intended specifically for ceiling application.
6) What do I need to rough in before installing this ceiling mount rain shower arm?
A 1/2-inch NPT female drop stubbed down through the ceiling, blocked so it will carry the arm plus the head. The arm threads to that stub and the 2 1/2-inch flange trims the opening. No showerhead is included, so order the rain head separately.
7) Is this American Standard shower arm suitable for a hotel or apartment shower?
It is catalogued by American Standard as a residential Rain family fitting. For high-traffic commercial washrooms, confirm the head and valve package you pair it with is spec'd for that duty; the arm itself is brass with a 1/2-inch NPT connection and installs the same way in either setting.
