American Standard TU184500.002 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the American Standard Times Square TU184500 trim kit include the shower valve body, or do I need a rough-in separately?
Trim only. The Times Square TU184500 is a valve-only trim kit, so you get the brass wall escutcheon, metal lever handle and the double ceramic pressure balance cartridge. The rough-in valve body is a separate purchase, and American Standard specifies it for use with their Flash shower rough-in valves.
2) Can I use this trim kit in a back-to-back bathroom layout where hot and cold are reversed?
Yes. The double ceramic pressure balance cartridge in the Times Square TU184500 has back-to-back capability, meaning hot and cold supplies can be reversed at the cartridge quickly without swapping parts. That matters on mirrored apartment or hotel bathrooms where the supplies land opposite the normal orientation.
3) Does this American Standard shower trim have an anti-scald adjustment?
It does. The cartridge includes an adjustable hot limit safety stop that caps how much hot water can mix with the cold, which reduces the risk of accidental scalding. The ceramic balancing spool also holds output temperature steady when a toilet flushes or another fixture drops the cold pressure. For multi-family and healthcare work, set the hot limit stop at final trim-out.
4) Is this a valve-only trim or a tub and shower trim with a diverter?
Valve only. The Times Square TU184500 controls a single outlet with one lever handle and has no diverter and no spout or showerhead included. If the job needs to switch between a tub spout and a showerhead, you want a tub/shower trim with an integral diverter or a separate diverter valve instead.
5) Do I need separate check valves with this shower trim to stop cross flow?
No extra check valves are needed at the trim. Integrated check valves are built into the Times Square TU184500 cartridge to eliminate cross flow between hot and cold. Supply-side code requirements on your job are a separate matter for the rough-in piping.
6) Why does this trim use a one-piece cartridge instead of separate mixing and balancing parts?
The Times Square trim combines a ceramic disc mixing valve and a ceramic balancing spool into a single cartridge. For maintenance staff that means one part to pull and one part to stock instead of two. The ceramic material is unaffected by mineral deposits and harsh water, which is the usual failure point on hard-water properties.
7) What finish does the Times Square TU184500 valve trim come in?
Chrome, ordered as TU184500.002. If you are standardizing a building on one look, that is the single finish offered for this trim, so it pairs with chrome Times Square spouts and showerheads on the same openings.
8) Is the handle on this American Standard Times Square trim metal or plastic?
Metal. The Times Square valve trim uses a metal lever handle on a brass wall escutcheon, which is what you want for hotel, dorm or multi-family showers where plastic handles get broken. The lever style is also easier to operate than a knob for accessibility-minded specs.
