American Standard 6047517.002 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What comes in the box with the American Standard 6047517 Ultima flush valve, and what do I have to order separately?
You get the manual flushometer valve body only. The stop valve, inlet assembly, spud coupling and vacuum breaker tube are all excluded, so if you are building a complete new installation you need to source those separately. That is why it is sold as a retrofit valve: the assumption is the existing stop, supply and spud hardware on the fixture stays in place and only the valve gets swapped.
2) Is the 6047517 Ultima valve for a toilet or a urinal?
Toilet. It is rated at 6.5 gpf / 24.6 Lpf, which is an old high-volume water closet flush rate, not a urinal rate. Putting it on a urinal would badly overflush the fixture.
3) Why would I buy a 6.5 gpf flush valve when current toilets are 1.6 gpf?
Because the flush volume has to match the bowl, not the code year. Older commercial water closets were engineered around a 6.5 gallon flush and will not clear properly on a low-volume valve. The Ultima 6047517 exists to re-valve those legacy fixtures without replacing the china. If the bowl in your building is a 1.6 gpf or 1.28 gpf fixture, this is the wrong valve and you want a matching low-consumption flushometer instead.
4) Does this Ultima flushometer have to be mounted on a particular side of the toilet?
No. The valve can be installed left- or right-handed, so a single part number covers stalls plumbed either direction. For a property manager standardizing restrooms across a building, that means one SKU on the shelf instead of two handed versions.
5) Can I adjust the flush volume on this valve after it is installed?
No. There is no external volume adjustment on the 6047517. It flushes at its rated 6.5 gpf and that is fixed. If your maintenance program relies on dialing volume down at the valve, this is not the model for it.
6) What stops a flushometer from running on continuously, and does this one address it?
Run-on usually starts when the refill orifice fouls with scale or debris and the valve cannot reseat. The Ultima uses DynaClean, an integral wiper spring that scrubs the refill orifice on every flush to keep it clear. In hard-water buildings that is the failure mode that drives most service calls on manual flushometers.
7) Is this a piston or diaphragm flushometer, and does it matter?
Piston-type. Piston valves meter by displacement rather than by flexing a rubber diaphragm, which American Standard cites for flush accuracy and repeatability on the Ultima. Practically, it matters for your parts room: a piston valve is rebuilt with a piston kit, not a diaphragm kit, so stock accordingly.
8) What finish does the 6047517 Ultima valve come in?
Chrome, part number 6047517.002. It is the only finish offered on this valve, which keeps it consistent with the polished chrome exposed piping and stops typically already in a commercial restroom.
