The kit ships as the inlet valve itself, the refill tube, and the shank nut. That's everything to mount the valve through the tank hole and route refill to the overflow. The supply line from the stop is not part of the kit, so reuse a good one or add a new closet supply to the order.

It's the fill valve, also called the inlet valve, the tower on the supply side of the tank that refills after each flush. It is not the flapper or the flush valve seat that dumps tank water into the bowl. If your toilet runs constantly, the flapper is the usual culprit; if the tank is slow to refill, whistles, or won't shut off at the top, the inlet valve is the part to replace.

The shank is the threaded stem that passes through the tank hole and takes the supply nut. Brass takes repeated wrench tightening and re-service without the thread crushing or cracking the way plastic can, which matters on toilets a maintenance crew opens more than once. The valve can send up to 28 percent of its flow down the refill tube to the bowl while the rest refills the tank. That's the adjustment range you have to get the bowl water level right after a flush. Too little refill and the bowl sits low and traps odor; too much wastes water on every cycle.

No specialty tooling. Shut the stop, flush the tank dry, unthread the supply nut and the shank nut, drop the old valve out, set the new one, hand tighten the shank nut with a quarter turn of wrench, clip the refill tube to the overflow, and open the stop. American Standard lists it as easy to install, and it's a routine in-unit repair for maintenance staff.
