1) What size and type of supply connection does the TOTO TSST mixing valve take?
1/2 inch NPT, threaded. That is male pipe thread, so it plumbs with standard 1/2 inch NPT fittings, and a copper or PEX rough-in needs the appropriate threaded adapters at the valve.
2) Do I need to add separate stops ahead of a TOTO TSST valve for service?
No. Service stops are built into the TSST valve body, so the hot and cold can be isolated at the valve for cartridge service without shutting down the branch or the riser. On a multi-family or hotel job that is the difference between one unit down and a whole stack down.
3) I need to standardize shower valves across a property. Does one TSST work with different TOTO trim styles?
Yes, and that is the practical reason to spec it. The same TSST valve body accepts thermostatic mixing valve trim from seven TOTO lines: Silas, Keane, Vivian, Connelly, Wyeth, Legato, and Upton. Rough in one valve everywhere, then let the trim style vary by unit tier or renovation phase without changing what is in the wall or what the plumber stocks.
4) Can the TSST valve run a showerhead and body sprays at the same time?
It is a 3 port valve, so there is one inlet pair plus outlet capacity to feed showerheads, hand showers, and body sprays. The temperature side is what the TSST controls; the split and on/off between those outlets comes from the volume control or diverter trim you pair with it. For a multi-outlet shower, plan the outlet count around the trim, not the valve.
5) Is a thermostatic valve like the TSST the right choice, or should I use a pressure balancing valve?
Pick thermostatic when you want the temperature held at a setpoint regardless of what happens upstream, and when you want volume controlled independently of temperature. The TSST is a thermostatic valve with anti-scald protection, and it dials flow down without changing the mix, which is what makes it work for conservation and for multi-outlet showers. A pressure balancing valve only reacts to pressure swings and ties flow to the mix, so it is the simpler choice for a single showerhead where temperature setpoint accuracy is not a requirement.
6) How fast does the TSST react if someone flushes a toilet and the cold drops?
Faster than a wax-element valve. The TSST uses a shape memory alloy coil rather than the conventional wax-type thermostatic element, and that coil responds to a temperature change more quickly, which is the whole point of the anti-scald behavior. A wax element has to physically melt and expand to move, so it lags.
7) Can the TOTO TSST be used on a tub and shower, or is it shower only?
Both. The TSST is rated for shower and tub applications, so it works as the rough-in for a tub/shower combination as well as a shower-only stall. Which outlets it actually feeds, and whether there is a tub spout diverter, is determined by the trim and the volume control you pair with it.
8) Will a bronze shower valve body hold up in a hard-water or coastal building?
