TOTO THP5229 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What exactly is TOTO THP5229?
THP5229 is a TOTO replacement O-ring for a service stop, the small valve that shuts off water to the fixture. It is a sealing ring only, not the stop body or the supply line.
2) Do I get the whole service stop valve with THP5229, or just the seal?
Just the seal. THP5229 is the O-ring off the service stop. If the stop body itself is cracked, seized, or the threads are damaged, an O-ring will not fix it and you need the complete stop assembly.
3) My TOTO service stop is weeping water around the valve. Will replacing this O-ring fix it?
That is the usual cause. A service stop that seeps at the body or stem, rather than failing to shut off, is normally a perished O-ring, and THP5229 is TOTO's replacement ring for that stop. If water passes through when the stop is fully closed, the seat is the problem, not the ring.
4) Can I use a generic hardware store O-ring instead of the TOTO part?
The service stop seal has to match the groove diameter and cross section, and it sits against a pressurized supply. THP5229 is the TOTO-specified ring for that stop, which takes the sizing guesswork out of it. A near-size generic ring is the common cause of a repeat callback.
5) Is TOTO THP5229 sold as a single ring or a pack?
THP5229 is one part number with a single configuration, so it comes as the one service stop O-ring. Maintenance crews servicing several fixtures should order one per stop.
6) What should a maintenance tech do before swapping the THP5229 O-ring?
Shut off water upstream of the service stop, not at the stop itself, then relieve pressure at the fixture before opening the valve. Once the old ring is out, check the groove for scale or scoring, and lightly lubricate the new ring so it seats without rolling.
