1) Is the TOTO THU808 trip lever the left-hand one for a tank with the handle on the left side?
Yes. The THU808#CP-A is TOTO's left hand side trip lever, meaning it mounts through the hole on the left face or left end of the tank. Trip levers are not reversible, so a tank drilled on the right needs TOTO's right hand trip lever instead. Check which side the hole is on before ordering, not which side the handle looked like it was on in a photo.
2) How do I know if I need the left hand or right hand TOTO trip lever?
Stand facing the toilet and look at the tank, not the handle. If the mounting hole is on the left side of the tank, you need the left hand lever, which is what THU808#CP-A is. A hole on the front left face and a hole on the left end wall are both left hand. Ordering the wrong hand gives you a lever whose arm swings away from the flush valve instead of over it.
3) What finish is the TOTO THU808 trip lever?
Polished chrome. TOTO codes finish in the suffix after the hash, and #CP is their polished chrome designation, so THU808#CP-A comes chrome plated. If the rest of the trim in the bathroom is brushed nickel or matte black, this one will not match.
4) Is the TOTO THU808 a replacement part or a whole new flush handle assembly?
It is a factory replacement part, sold as the trip lever itself: the handle, the shaft that passes through the tank, and the arm the flush chain or strap connects to. You are not getting a flush valve, a fill valve, or a tank lid with it. If the handle snapped, is loose at the tank wall, or the arm corroded through, this is the piece that fixes it.
5) Will a generic hardware store toilet handle work instead of the TOTO THU808?
Often not. TOTO tanks use model specific trip lever geometry, the arm length and the bend that positions the chain over the flush valve, plus the thread and nut orientation at the tank wall. A universal lever can leave the chain pulling at an angle and either running on or failing to lift the flapper cleanly. The THU808 is the TOTO replacement part for the left hand configuration, so it drops into the same hole with the same arm reach.
6) Can a property manager stock the TOTO THU808 for a whole building of toilets?
Only where the tanks are left hand drilled. Trip lever hand follows the tank casting, so a mixed fleet of TOTO toilets can need both hands even within the same building.
