1) What does the ABH CME0340 top pivot actually do, and do I still need a bottom pivot or floor closer?
The CME0340 is a walking beam top pivot only, built for center hung openings. It carries the head of the door and adds a concealed magnetic monitor switch with thru wires so the door position reports back to an access control or alarm panel. The load is carried at the bottom, so you still need a center hung bottom pivot or a floor closer under the door. Order that separately.
2) Can I use the CME0340 electrified pivot on a fire rated door?
No. The CME0340 pivot is not fire rated, so it cannot go on a labeled fire door assembly. For a rated opening you need pivot hardware carrying a fire rating, such as the BEST A3 System offset hung pivot set, which is fire rated.
3) How does the CME0340 mortise into the door and frame?
Two mortises. The jamb leaf mortises into the header, and the door leaf mortises into the top edge of the door. A dress plate comes with it to cover the door leaf prep. Because the switch and wiring are concealed inside those mortises, this is a prep-in-advance part: get the template into the door shop before the leaf is finished rather than trying to route it in the field.
4) Do I need a separate door position switch if I install the ABH CME0340?
No. The monitor switch is built into the pivot, so you skip the surface or recessed DPS in the frame entirely. Thru wires are included to get the contact out of the pivot. For integrators, that is one less hole in the header and one less exposed device on a high-traffic entrance. 5) What pivot works instead of the ABH CME0340 on a fire rated opening?
The ABH CME0340 electrified top pivot is not fire rated, so on an opening that has to carry a fire label, look at the BEST A3 System offset hung pivot set, which is fire rated. The tradeoff is function: the CME0340 carries a concealed magnetic monitor switch with thru wires for door position feedback, and the A3 is a mechanical pivot set with BEST premium core technology. If the opening needs both a fire label and electronic monitoring, the monitoring has to come from another device in the opening rather than from the pivot.
6) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the ABH CME0340 pivot?
No handing to call out. The CME0340 is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings, in or out swing. For a property manager or facility stocking spares, that means a single pivot on the shelf works on any of the center hung doors it fits.
