ABUS 72/40HB75 KD ORANGE – Frequently Asked Questions

1) I need one padlock per electrician on a lockout, all opening on different keys. Which way do I order the ABUS 72 Series?
Order the keyed different (KD) option. Each 72/40HB75 then comes on its own key, which is what lockout/tagout requires so no one else can release another worker's lock. If instead you want one key to open every lock on a route or a bank of cabinets, order keyed alike (KA). Both keying choices are offered in all six colors: black, blue, green, orange, red and yellow. Every lock ships with two keys.
2) Can the ABUS 72/40HB75 be rekeyed to a key we already use in the building?
Yes. It uses an ABUS precision 6-pin cylinder and is rekeyable, so a locksmith can pin it to an existing ABUS 72 or 74 Series key. Series 72 and 74 locks can also be combined into one locking system, which is how you get a supervisor key over a set of color-coded locks. If your facility standards call for a small-format interchangeable core instead, that is a different platform, the Sargent 60-858-2 removable core padlock is the type to look at.
3) What is the difference between the ABUS 72/40HB75 aluminum padlock and the Medeco 5260 brass padlock?
They are built around different bodies and shackles. The 72/40HB75 uses a TITALIUM aluminum body 39mm wide with a 6mm shackle diameter, is rekeyable on a 6-pin cylinder, and is self-locking, so it latches when the shackle is pushed down without a key. The Medeco 5260 is a brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in a satin chrome finish. Choose the 5260 where a brass body and a heavier 7/16 inch shackle are wanted; choose the 72/40HB75 where a lighter aluminum body and color-coded assignment matter, as it comes in black, blue, green, orange, red and yellow.
4) Does the ABUS 72/40HB75 padlock retain the key when unlocked, and what should I use if I need a key-retaining lock?
The 72/40HB75 is self-locking: the shackle latches by being pushed down, without the key. Where a procedure requires the key to stay captive in the lock while the shackle is open, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock in a US4 satin brass finish. The Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are both non-key retaining, as is the Medeco 54515G, so specify the 758 rather than those when key retention is the deciding requirement.
5) For an exposed outdoor gate, is the ABUS 72/40HB75 the right padlock or is there a better option?
The 72/40HB75 carries a weather resistant rating and a corrosion-resistant aluminum body, which suits doors, gates, cabinets and switchgear where the lock sees weather intermittently. For a fully exposed marine or washdown position, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, and it ships less the pop-out cylinder so the cylinder is specified separately. The 72/40HB75 ships as a complete lock with its own 6-pin rekeyable cylinder and needs nothing added.
6) I need to standardize padlocks on our facility interchangeable core system - can I use the ABUS 72/40HB75?
The 72/40HB75 uses an ABUS 6-pin cylinder that is rekeyable to an existing key, and it is ordered keyed alike or keyed different. That is a fit for keying a group of locks together rather than for a small format or large format core program. Where the facility runs a removable core standard and maintenance swaps cores rather than rekeying, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. 7) Why would I use a colored aluminum ABUS 72 Series padlock instead of a brass or stainless padlock for lockout/tagout?
Color is the point. The 72/40HB75 body is TITALIUM special aluminum finished in one of six colors, so you can assign a color per trade, per shift, or per area and tell at a glance whose lock is on the switch. Aluminum also keeps the weight down when a worker is carrying several. A brass or stainless body padlock like the Sargent 858 with its stainless shackle or the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock is the choice when you want a single heavy-duty lock on a gate or a fence, not a color-coded set on an energy isolation program.
8) Does the ABUS 72/40HB75 lock without the key, and does it hold the key when open?
It is self-locking. Push the shackle down and it latches, no key needed, which is what you want when a technician is closing out twenty cabinets and does not want to handle a key at each one. The trade-off is that the key comes out with the lock open, so nothing stops someone walking away with the key in their pocket and the lock hanging free. If your procedure requires the key to be trapped while the lock is open, a key-retaining padlock such as the Sargent 758 is the type to specify.
9) Will an ABUS 72 Series aluminum padlock survive outdoors on a gate or a yard cabinet?

The 72/40HB75 is a mechanical padlock with a 6-pin rekeyable cylinder and two keys, with no electronic credential. For an electronically credentialed opening, the Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock supplied with a cylinder, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter. Choose the 54515G where the padlock has to be part of an electronic key system; the 72/40HB75 remains the choice where a key and a colored body are all the site needs.
11) The ABUS 72/40HB75 shackle clearance is too small for my hasp - what has a taller or wider shackle opening?
The 72/40HB75 gives 19.5mm of horizontal shackle clearance and 6mm vertical, on a 6mm diameter shackle, which suits a standard hasp or a lockout hasp eye. Where the hasp staple or chain needs more room, the Sargent 60-858-2 carries a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Sargent 82-856 has a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case with a stainless steel shackle. Measure the staple before substituting, since the larger Sargent bodies also need more room around the hasp.
12) Is the Schlage KS23D/KS23F a substitute for the ABUS 72/40HB75?
They are both commercial padlocks, but they are not interchangeable in a color-coded program. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle. The 72/40HB75 has an aluminum body 39mm wide with a 6mm shackle diameter and is offered in black, blue, green, orange, red and yellow, which is what allows locks to be assigned by area or by user. If the requirement is a brass body on a Schlage keyway, the KS23D/KS23F is the one to quote; if the requirement is a lightweight colored body that self-locks, it is not a substitute.
13) Can I mark or engrave ABUS 72/40 padlocks with a department or asset number?
