1) Is a combination padlock or a keyed padlock better for school and gym lockers?
For lockers, cupboards and low-theft-risk storage, the 78/50 combination lock takes keys out of the picture entirely: users open it with a three-digit code, so nobody has to issue, track or replace a key. That is the tradeoff. Where you need a locksmith to control access through a key system, a keyed padlock is the right call instead, such as the Sargent 758 key retaining padlock or the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock. ABUS is explicit that the 78 is for valuables of lesser value or at a low risk of theft, so for high-value assets go keyed.
2) Can a facility manager override an ABUS 78 combination lock if a student forgets the code?
Not on the 78/50. Override is a function of the 78KC version, which adds a master key cylinder on the back of the lock, and one numerical key opens more than 2,000 individual combinations. If you are running a locker bank and need staff-level access without cutting locks off, specify the KC version, not the plain 78/50.
3) I need padlocks that key into our existing master key system, not a combination. What are my options?
