Padlock brass 82 Monobloc

Brass padlock with hardened special steel shackle for protection in hard-to-reach areas

  • Solid lock body made from brass
  • Shackle made from hardened special steel
  • Rectangular lock body for special use cases

The sturdy brass padlock

The Monoblock 82 works particularly well for locking areas that are difficult to access, such as roller grilles, vending machines, etc.

The shackle is made of special hardened steel. A hardened steel pin on the narrow side of the lock body protects against manipulation with sawing tools. Due to the special design, the padlock locks intuitively without a key by simply pressing the shackle.

Technology:

  • Solid lock body made from brass
  • 15/32" hardened special steel shackle
  • Hardened steel pin protects the narrow side of the lock body against sawing
  • Automatic locking: Locking without key by pushing down the shackle
  • Precision pin tumbler
  • Inner components made from rust-free materials
  • Incl. two keys

Operation and use:

  • 82/63 + 82/70: To secure valuables/goods of medium value or at an average risk of theft
  • 82/90: To secure valuables/goods of greater value or at a high risk of theft
  • For special applications, e.g. automats as well as gates, doors, containers, lorries, etc.
  • Ideally used with ABUS hasps No. 125 and 130

ABUS 82/70-KA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the ABUS 82/70 padlock fit through my hasp? What is the shackle opening?
The 82/70 has a 15/32 inch diameter hardened steel shackle with 55/64 inch of horizontal shackle clearance, and the body measures 2-25/32 inches wide. That clearance is the usable gap the shackle spans, so measure the staple or eye on your hasp against 55/64 inch before ordering. ABUS lists it as working with their No. 125 and No. 130 hasps.
2) Can you lock the ABUS 82 Monoblock without the key?
Yes. Push the shackle down and it locks automatically, no key needed. That is the reason it suits roller grilles, vending machines and other spots where you are reaching in blind and cannot line up a keyway. The key is only needed to open it. Two keys come with the lock.
3) Should I order the 82/70 keyed alike or keyed different?
Both are offered. Keyed alike means every lock in the order opens on the same key, which is what a property manager or MRO buyer wants when one person carries one key for a run of grilles, gates or cabinets. Keyed different gives each padlock its own key, which is right when separate tenants, drivers or departments each control their own lock. Pick this at the order line.
4) Is the ABUS 82/70 strong enough for a high-theft-risk site?
ABUS positions the 82/63 and 82/70 for goods of medium value or average theft risk. If the contents are high value or the location is a known target, the 82/90 in the same Monoblock family is the one ABUS rates for greater value and high risk. The 82/70 body is solid brass with a hardened special steel shackle and a hardened steel pin in the narrow side of the body to resist sawing.
5) I need a padlock on a keying system with interchangeable cores - what should I use instead of the ABUS 82/70?
The ABUS 82/70 uses a precision pin tumbler cylinder built into the brass body and ships keyed alike or keyed different with two keys, so the cylinder is not swappable. If the site runs a removable-core master key system, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle in the 758/858 Series, which lets the core be keyed into an existing system.
6) What is the closest brass-body padlock alternative to the ABUS 82/70?
The Medeco 5260 is the nearest brass-body peer. Both use a solid brass body; the ABUS 82/70 carries a 15/32 inch hardened special steel shackle in a rectangular body 2-25/32 inches wide, while the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter, M3 key technology, and a satin chrome finish. The ABUS body is rectangular for tight, hard-to-reach openings; the Medeco is a conventional 52 Series form.
7) For an outdoor gate exposed to weather, is there a better choice than the ABUS 82/70?
The ABUS 82/70 has a brass body with rust-free inner components, which handles outdoor duty, and it is rated for commercial use. Where a fully stainless body is specified, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder. The Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter if the gate is part of an electronic access system.
8) Does the ABUS 82/70 retain the key when unlocked, and what are the alternatives?
The ABUS 82/70 locks automatically by pushing the shackle down, so no key is needed to lock it. If a key-retaining padlock is required so the padlock cannot be left open and the key walked away, the Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass. Non-key-retaining peers include the Sargent 858 with stainless steel shackle in US4 satin brass and the Sargent 82-856 with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and stainless steel shackle.
9) Will an ABUS Monoblock 82 padlock hold up outdoors on a gate or container?
The body is solid brass and the internal components are made from rust-free materials, which is why brass-bodied padlocks are the usual pick for exposed gates, containers and truck doors. ABUS names gates, doors, containers and lorries among its intended uses, alongside vending machines and automats. It is classed as a commercial-duty lock.
10) Why is the 82 Monoblock body rectangular instead of the usual padlock shape?
The rectangular body is what makes it work in tight, hard-to-reach spots, a roller grille track, a vending machine housing, a recessed staple, where a conventional round-shouldered padlock will not seat. Combined with the push-to-lock shackle, you can secure it one-handed without sighting the keyway. At 2-25/32 inches wide, check the pocket you are fitting it into.
11) What are the alternatives to the ABUS 82/70 brass padlock?
Among other brass-bodied padlocks: the Medeco 5260 of the 52 Series carries a 7/16 inch shackle and satin chrome finish, and the Schlage KS23D/KS23F brass padlock uses a 5/16 inch shackle, both thinner shackles than the 82/70's 15/32 inch. Sargent's 758 is key retaining, meaning the key cannot be withdrawn while the lock is open, while the 858 is non-key retaining. For a stainless steel body instead of brass, there is the Medeco 521 G8R weather-tight padlock.
12) I need a padlock I can control electronically with an audit trail. Is the ABUS 82/70 it?
No. The 82/70 is a purely mechanical pin tumbler padlock with two keys. For access control on a padlock, the Medeco 54515G XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock of the System Series is the electronic option, with a 5/16 inch shackle and non-key retaining operation.
13) Which padlocks look like substitutes for the ABUS 82/70 but have a thinner shackle?
The ABUS 82/70 shackle is 15/32 inch in diameter. The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is also a brass padlock but with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, and the Medeco 54515G XT uses a 5/16 inch shackle as well. If the hasp or roller grille opening was sized around the 82/70 shackle, those thinner shackles will sit loosely in the same staple.
14) We are standardizing padlocks across a property with brass-case locks - how does the ABUS 82/70 compare to the Sargent 82-856?
Both are brass-cased commercial padlocks. The ABUS 82/70 is 2-25/32 inches wide with 55/64 inch horizontal shackle clearance, a hardened special steel shackle, and a hardened steel pin guarding the narrow side against sawing. The Sargent 82-856 is a non-key-retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle in the KESO Series. Shackle clearance differs, so verify each hasp before mixing them on one site.
