Padlock aluminum 83AL TITALIUM™

Keyed alike, corrosion protected, a robust lightweight: Our 83AL Titalium padlock is a true all-rounder!

LIGHTWEIGHT AND FLEXIBLE

Our 83AL Titalium padlock has a replaceable lock cylinder.

We recommend our 83AL Titalium padlock if you want to secure higher-value or larger objects at a high risk of theft. This makes it a great fit for locking grilles, doors, gates, cabinets, tool boxes, basement windows, switchgear, or barriers. Thanks to the replaceable lock cylinder, you can combine multiple lock cylinders (for example, the one from the front door with the shed) with the same key so that you only need one key. The lock body of the 83AL is made of particularly lightweight TITALIUM™ special aluminum, the shackle of hardened special steel with NANO PROTECT™ coating. This padlock allows you to choose between two locking mechanisms: With automatic locking, you simply push down the shackle of the 83AL and the padlock is locked. In the variant with key-retaining, you need a key to lock. This prevents accidental locking.

Technology:

  • Lock body made from TITALIUM™ special aluminum - high security with low weight
  • Hardened special steel shackle with NANO PROTECT™ coating for very high corrosion resistance
  • Patented Z-Bar" for 2 in 1 function: converts key retaining to non-key retaining and vice versa in seconds"
  • Cylinder can be taken out and can be re-keyed to match an existing key
  • RK: Can be keyed into many popular security keyways
  • Version "S": Designed to accept Snowman-cylinders; cylinder not included

Operation and use:

  • To secure valuables / goods of greater value or at a high risk of theft
  • To secure gratings, doors, gates, cupboards, tool boxes, cellar windows, sheds, switchboards, barriers, etc.

ABUS 83AL/45HB50 Blue – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the ABUS 83AL Titalium padlock be keyed to match my existing building key?
Yes. The 83AL has a removable lock cylinder that can be taken out and re-keyed to an existing key, and the RK version can be keyed into many popular security keyways. That is the main reason property managers pick this one: you can bring the padlocks on gates, sheds, and switchgear onto the same key as the front door instead of carrying a separate padlock key. There is also a version S built to accept Snowman cylinders, but the cylinder is not included with that one.
2) Is the ABUS 83AL padlock key retaining or non-key retaining?
Either, and you can switch it yourself. The 83AL uses a patented Z-Bar that converts key retaining to non-key retaining and back in seconds. Non-key retaining (automatic locking) means you just push the shackle down and it locks, which suits gates and grilles people close on the run. Key retaining means the key stays captive until the lock is shut, so nobody accidentally locks a container or a panel they still need open.
3) Will an aluminum padlock body hold up outdoors on a gate or yard barrier?
It is built for it. The 83AL body is TITALIUM special aluminum, and the shackle is hardened special steel with a NANO PROTECT coating for very high corrosion resistance. ABUS positions it as corrosion protected for outdoor use on gates, grilles, barriers, cellar windows, and switchboards. The aluminum body also keeps the weight down compared with a solid brass or steel body padlock, which matters when you are hanging dozens of them across a site.
4) I run a small format interchangeable core system. Is the ABUS 83AL the right padlock?
Not necessarily. The 83AL cylinder comes out and can be re-keyed, and the RK version keys into many popular security keyways, but if your site is standardized on a removable core program you are usually better served by a padlock built around that core. The Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, and the Medeco 54515G XT is an indoor/outdoor padlock supplied with a cylinder. Match the padlock to the key system you already maintain.
5) What is the closest brass-body alternative to the ABUS 83AL/45HB50 Titalium padlock?
If you want a brass body instead of the lightweight TITALIUM special aluminum used on the 83AL/45HB50, the Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter and M3 key technology in a satin chrome finish. Brass adds weight compared with the aluminum body of the 83AL, and the Medeco uses Medeco's own M3 cylinder rather than the removable, re-keyable cylinder of the ABUS.
6) What is the difference between key-retaining and non-key-retaining padlocks, and how does the ABUS 83AL compare to the Sargent 758 and 858?
The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in US4 satin brass, meaning the key cannot be withdrawn while the lock is open, and the Sargent 858 is the non-key-retaining version with a stainless steel shackle in the same US4 satin brass finish. The ABUS 83AL/45HB50 covers both behaviors in one lock through its patented Z-Bar, which converts key retaining to non-key retaining and back in seconds.
7) For a marine or coastal exterior gate, is there a more corrosion-resistant option than the ABUS 83AL/45HB50?
The ABUS 83AL/45HB50 pairs a TITALIUM aluminum body with a hardened special steel shackle carrying a NANO PROTECT coating for very high corrosion resistance. If you prefer an all-stainless body, the Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less the pop-out cylinder so the cylinder is specified separately.
8) What colors does the ABUS 83AL/45HB50 padlock come in for color coding a site?
Nine finishes: blue, brown, silver, green, orange, purple, red, titanium, and yellow. That range is why crews use the 83AL to color code by trade, building, or access level, so a tech can tell at a glance whether a lock is theirs before pulling out keys. All nine are the same 83AL/45HB50 lock, so you can standardize one part number across a facility and just vary the color.
9) How does the ABUS 83AL compare with a brass or stainless body padlock like the Sargent 858 or Medeco 5260?
The difference is body material and weight. The 83AL uses a TITALIUM aluminum body with a hardened steel shackle, so it is the light option. If you want a metal body instead, ZenSupply carries the Sargent 858 non-key-retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in US4 satin brass, the Sargent 758 in key retaining form, the Medeco 5260 brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter, and the Medeco 521 G8R with a solid stainless steel body for weather-tight service. Pick by what your environment and your existing key system demand rather than by body alone.
10) Does the ABUS 83AL padlock ship with a cylinder installed?
The standard 83AL is a complete padlock with its cylinder in place, and that cylinder can be pulled and re-keyed later. The exception is the version S, which is designed to accept Snowman cylinders and does not include one. If you order S, plan on sourcing the cylinder separately so the lock is not dead on arrival at the job.
11) Is the Medeco 54515G XT a direct substitute for the ABUS 83AL/45HB50?
No. The Medeco 54515G XT is an electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and cylinder included, and it belongs to the System Series audit-trail platform. The ABUS 83AL/45HB50 is a purely mechanical padlock with a replaceable, re-keyable cylinder. They fit similar hasps but the Medeco requires an electronic key and system enrollment, so it is not a like-for-like swap.
12) Which padlock gives me the simplest option if I only need a basic brass keyed padlock rather than the ABUS 83AL Titalium?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle in the 20 Series, a straightforward keyed brass lock. The ABUS 83AL/45HB50 adds the TITALIUM aluminum body, the NANO PROTECT coated steel shackle, and the Z-Bar that switches between key retaining and non-key retaining operation, so choose it when you need those features rather than a plain brass body.
13) I need color-coded padlocks for departmental lockout and key control. Does the ABUS 83AL do that better than the Sargent or Medeco padlocks?
The ABUS 83AL/45HB50 is offered in blue, brown, silver, green, orange, purple, red, titanium, and yellow, so crews can color-code by trade, building, or department. The comparable padlocks are specified by metal finish instead: the Sargent 758 and 858 in US4 satin brass and the Medeco 5260 in satin chrome. Pick the 83AL when visual sorting matters as much as the keying.
14) What should I specify instead of the ABUS 83AL if my facility is standardized on a high-security KESO system?
The Sargent 82-856 is a non-key-retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle built on the KESO Series, so it keys into a KESO high-security system directly. The ABUS 83AL/45HB50 takes a removable cylinder that can be keyed into many popular security keyways, which suits facilities standardizing on a conventional keyway rather than KESO.
15) Is the ABUS 83AL a commercial grade padlock or a residential one?
It is catalogued for commercial use. ABUS recommends the 83AL where you are securing higher-value or larger objects at high risk of theft, which is the MRO and facilities case: tool cribs, switchgear, cabinets, and perimeter gates. The removable, re-keyable cylinder is the piece that makes it work for a facility, because you can fold the padlocks into whatever keyway the rest of the site already runs.
