1) Will the ABUS 85/50 padlock work outdoors on a gate or shed?

Yes. 3) Is the ABUS 85/50 enough lock for a high-theft location, or should I size up?
ABUS splits the 85 family by risk level: 85/20 through 85/40 for goods of medium value or average theft risk, and 85/50 through 85/70 for higher value goods or high theft risk. 4) Can the ABUS 85/50 take our facility's interchangeable core?

5) What is a brass-body padlock equivalent to the ABUS 85/50 with the same 5/16 inch shackle diameter?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is the closest match on both counts: it is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, the same shackle diameter as the ABUS 85/50, and it belongs to Schlage's 20 Series. Like the 85/50 it uses a brass body, so it weathers the same way on outdoor gates, sheds, and utility cabinets. The practical difference is keying ecosystem rather than build: the 85/50 uses an ABUS precision pin cylinder with a paracentric keyway and can be made keyed alike to existing ABUS keys by the trade, while the KS23 keys into Schlage's system. 6) What padlock should I use instead of a brass one on a dock or coastal site?
For salt exposure, move to a stainless body rather than brass. The Medeco 521 G8R is a weather-tight padlock with a solid stainless steel body, supplied less pop-out cylinder so the cylinder is specified separately. 7) I need a padlock that accepts our facility's interchangeable core. Does the ABUS 85/50 work?
No. The ABUS 85/50 is built around a fixed precision pin cylinder with mushroom pins and a paracentric keyway; it is made keyed alike to existing keys by the trade rather than by swapping a core in the field. If the facility standard is a removable core so locksmiths can rekey without pulling the padlock, the Sargent 60-858-2 is the one to spec - it is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle in the 758/858 Series. That is the usual choice when a campus or plant already stocks cores and wants padlocks on the same key system as the doors.
8) Which padlock keeps the key captive until it is locked, the way our lockout procedure requires?
Key retention is the deciding spec here and it splits the field. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish, so the key cannot be withdrawn while the shackle is open - the behavior lockout and key control programs usually call for. The Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are both non-key retaining, as is the Medeco 54515G XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock. The ABUS 85/50 locks automatically when the shackle is pressed down, no key needed to secure it, which is a different convenience and not the same as key retention. If the written procedure says key retaining, order the 758.
9) Does the ABUS 85/50 lock without the key, and does the key come out while it is open?
Press the shackle down and it locks automatically, no key needed, so a maintenance tech can secure a locker or panel one-handed. It takes the key to open it again. If you specifically need a key-retaining lock, where the key cannot be withdrawn while the shackle is open, that is a different design: the Sargent 758 is a key retaining padlock, while the Sargent 858 and the Sargent 82-856 are non-key retaining.
10) What keeps the ABUS 85/50 cylinder from being picked or bumped?
The 85/50 runs a precision pin cylinder with mushroom pins, which resist picking by binding under manipulation, and a paracentric keyway, whose narrow winding profile makes it hard to get a pick past the warding. Standard commercial-duty padlock protection, not a high-security restricted-key cylinder.
11) Is the ABUS 85/50 suitable for electrical lockout tagout?
