ABUS 88/50-KD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I get ABUS 88/50 padlocks all on one key for a building or a fleet of gates?
Yes. The 88/50 is ordered either KA (keyed alike, every lock opens on the same key) or KD (keyed different, each lock its own key). Property managers running a set of gates, sheds or switchboards usually take KA so one key covers the route; if you need a mix, order the KA group and the KD singles as separate line items. The ABUS Plus disc cylinder can also be re-keyed to match an existing key, so a lock added later can be brought onto the same key rather than restarting the system.
2) Does the ABUS 88/50 hold the key while the lock is open?
It does. The 88/50 is key retaining, meaning the key will not come out until the lock is shut again. That is what you want on a route where somebody has to close up behind themselves, since the key cannot walk off in a pocket with the lock left hanging open. If you specifically need the opposite, a lock you can carry the key away from while the shackle is open, look at a non-key-retaining padlock such as the Sargent 858 or the Sargent 82-856.
3) I need padlocks on my facility's existing key system. Can the ABUS 88/50 be keyed into it?
The 88/50 cylinder can be re-keyed to match an existing key, so it can be brought onto a key you already carry. But it uses an ABUS Plus disc cylinder, not a pin tumbler keyway, so it joins an ABUS Plus system, not a Schlage or Sargent one. If your facility standardizes on a conventional brand keyway or on interchangeable cores, the padlock has to come from that system instead. For interchangeable core, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock; for a Medeco system, the Medeco 5260 uses M3 key technology.
4) I need a padlock the key can come out of while it is unlocked - what do I use instead of the ABUS 88/50?
The ABUS 88/50 is key retaining, meaning the key will not release until the lock is closed. If a crew needs to pocket the key and leave the lock hanging open, switch to a non-key retaining padlock: the Sargent 858 has a stainless steel shackle in a US4 satin brass finish, or the Sargent 82-856 uses a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case with a stainless steel shackle. This is the single most common reason an 88/50 gets returned - the retaining behavior is a workflow decision, not a security downgrade, and it has to be settled before the order goes in.
5) Which padlock works with my facility's interchangeable core keying instead of the ABUS 88/50?
The 88/50 uses an ABUS-Plus disc cylinder that can be re-keyed to match an existing key, but that is a re-key at the cylinder, not a core swap. For a facility already standardized on removable cores, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle, so the padlock joins the same core program as the doors. Institutional buyers standardizing a campus usually want the core-based lock; a single-property manager re-keying a handful of gates to one existing key is well served by the 88/50.
6) Is a brass padlock like the ABUS 88/50 alright outdoors in salt air?
That is the case it is built for. Solid brass body with chrome plating over it for better corrosion resistance, and ABUS calls out coastal regions, ports, and securing goods on vehicles and boats as intended use. Brass does not rust the way a plated steel body does once the plating is scratched, which is why it holds up on marina gates and dock boxes. The shackle is hardened alloy steel.
7) What does double bolted mean on a padlock and does it matter for a gate?
Double bolted means the shackle is locked on both legs, the heel as well as the toe. Cut or force one side of a single bolted lock and the shackle swings free; on the 88/50 both legs stay captive, so an attack has to defeat two points. The Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock, non-key retaining, with a 5/16 inch shackle diameter and supplied with cylinder. It is an electronic credential lock rather than a mechanical one, so it answers a different question than the ABUS 88/50, which is a mechanical brass padlock using an ABUS-Plus disc cylinder that can be re-keyed to an existing key. Note the retention difference as well: the 54515G is non-key retaining while the 88/50 holds the key until the shackle is closed.
