ACSI 3780 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What voltage and current does the ACSI 3780 mag lock draw?
It runs on either 12VDC at 500mA or 24VDC at 250mA, so a standard access control power supply at either voltage will carry it. Surge and spike protection is built in.
2) What happens to the ACSI 3780 mag lock when the power goes out?
It unlocks. The 3700 Series is positive fail safe, so cutting power releases the magnet and the door opens, which is how these locks conform with life-safety codes on egress doors. If you need a door that stays locked without power, a mag lock of any brand is the wrong choice.
3) Can I monitor whether the ACSI 3780 mag lock is actually holding the door?
Door position sensing is built in, so you get door status back at the panel as standard. True bond sensing, which reports that the magnet is actually pulled up to the armature and not just that the door is closed, is an option you add at order time along with a power LED.
4) I need delayed egress on a stairwell door. Will the ACSI 3780 do that?
No. The 3780 is a straight fail safe hold, it releases as soon as power drops and has no built in egress delay timer. For a delayed egress opening, the Alarm Controls 1200DE is a delayed egress magnetic lock for a single door, and the DynaLock 2101 Series is a 1200 lb. early warning lock.
5) I am replacing a Locknetics 390+ mag lock. Is the ACSI 3780 a drop-in?
No retrofit compatibility with the Locknetics 390+ is claimed for the ACSI 3780, and holding force differs. The direct retrofit for that opening is the Schlage Electronics M390RFK, a 1500 lb. heavy duty electromagnetic lock listed as a direct retrofit for the Locknetics 390+, with door status monitor, magnetic bond sensor and relock time delay.
6) I need more holding force than 600 lb. on a single door - what should I use instead?
For a single door needing higher holding force, the DynaLock 2011 is a surface mount 1200 lb. electromagnetic lock for outswing doors, and the DynaLock 2050 is a 1200 lb. surface mount unit for outswing or inswing single or double doors. Higher still, the Dorma EML310 is a 1500 lb. single door lock available with a door position sensor, and the Schlage M390RFK is a 1500 lb. heavy duty unit with door status monitor and magnetic bond sensor. The ACSI 3780 itself is a surface mounted 600 lb. unit.
7) Which alternatives to the ACSI 3780 are fire rated?
The Dorma EML310 and EML320 electromagnetic locks are fire rated and are electrically locked, fail safe by function. The ACSI 3780 is a UL Listed fail safe lock that conforms with life-safety codes, so if a fire label is required on the assembly, confirm the specific listing you need against the Dorma units.
8) Is the ACSI 3780 UL Listed, and is it rated for commercial use?
The 3700 Series electromagnetic locks are UL Listed, and the 3780 is a commercial-grade device. Note that it is not an ADA compliant product on its own, so the opening still needs compliant operation and release hardware where ADA applies.
9) Is there a slimmer 600 lb. mag lock if my header will not take a full size housing?
The Dortronics 1107 is a narrow 2 inch slim line 600 lb. single door mag lock, same holding force as the ACSI 3780 in a tighter profile. On the ACSI side, custom length housings are an available option if the length rather than the width is the constraint.
10) Can I use the ACSI 3780 surface mag lock on a sliding door?
No. It is a surface mounted electromagnet designed for swinging doors, outswing or inswing. For a sliding door use a lock built for it, such as the Schlage Electronics 320M compact mortise sliding door electromagnetic lock at 1500 lb. holding force.
11) Is there a lighter-duty magnetic lock if 600 lb. is more than the opening needs?
Yes. The Schlage M420 is a single door electromagnetic lock rated at 500 lbs holding force, below the 600 lb. rating of the ACSI 3780. Both are single door mag locks; the difference is the holding force and the mounting hardware each brand supplies.
12) What do I use for a pair of doors instead of the ACSI 3780?
The 3780 and 3790 models cover single applications, though the 3700 Series as a whole is designed for single or pairs of outswing or inswing doors. If you want a factory double-magnet unit, the Alarm Controls 1200D Series and the Dorma EML320 at 1500 lb. are double door electromagnetic locks, and the DynaLock 2250 Series is a double 1200 lb. surface mounted unit for outswing or inswing single or double doors.
13) Are there alternatives with a different mounting approach than the surface mounted ACSI 3780?
Yes. The ROFU 8512 is a single magnet unit with a selectable keyhole mount at 1200 LB holding force on 12/24VDC, which changes how the magnet is fastened to the frame. The Schlage 320M is a compact mortise unit for sliding doors at 1500 lbs. The ACSI 3780 is surface mounted, with custom length housings and glass door brackets offered as options for storefront work.
14) How much maintenance does a mag lock like the ACSI 3780 need compared with a mechanical lock?
Effectively none. There are no moving parts in the 3700 Series, so there is nothing to wear, adjust or lubricate the way there is with a latch and strike. Power draw is low, and it is hard wired rather than battery operated, so there are no cells to change on a schedule.
