Aiphone MH-15W – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Aiphone MH-15W horn speaker work on a 70V paging system?
Yes. The MH-15W has a built-in transformer for 100/70/25V distributed systems, so it drops onto a standard 70V paging line without an outboard transformer. Tap selection runs 5.0K/2.5K/1.3K/670/330/90 ohms, plus a straight 8 ohm direct tap, and the taps are adjustable from outside the horn so you can set the level after it is mounted.
2) Can I connect the MH-15W speaker horn directly to an intercom amplifier instead of a 70V line?
Yes, and this is the reason to pick it over a transformer-only horn. The MH-15W carries an 8 ohm direct tap alongside the 25V/70V taps, so it connects straight to an 8 ohm amplifier output. Aiphone calls out use with intercom systems for two-way communication that require the 8 ohm direct connection, which is what most door and gate intercom amplifiers put out.
3) Is the Aiphone MH-15W rated for outdoor mounting in weather?
It is built for it. The horn body is spun aluminum and the driver housing is die cast aluminum, an all-metal assembly with weatherproof/waterproof construction, so it takes exterior walls, loading docks, gate entries and parking areas. There is no plastic cone to break down in sun or freeze cycles.
4) How much area will one 15W horn speaker cover for paging?
The MH-15W puts out 120dB sensitivity measured at 1 meter on axis with a full 15W input, with 110 degree dispersion. That combination is a long-throw pattern: high output down the axis, and a spread wide enough that a single horn covers an open yard or dock face rather than needing a pair. Frequency response is 375 to 14,000Hz, which is voice band, not music, so plan it for paging and signaling.
5) Should I use a horn speaker or a ceiling speaker for paging a warehouse or exterior yard?
Horn like the MH-15W where the space is loud, open, or outdoors. Its 110 degree dispersion and 120dB output at 1 meter throw voice across distance and over machine noise, and the aluminum weatherproof body survives outside. Its 375 to 14,000Hz response cuts the low end deliberately, which keeps speech intelligible in a reverberant space but makes it a poor choice for background music or a finished office ceiling. Use a cone speaker for those.
6) Does the Aiphone MH-15W come with a mounting bracket, and can I aim it after installation?
A universal mounting bracket is included. The horn mounts directly to a flat surface, wall or soffit, and pivots on the bracket so you can set the angle at the opening you actually need to cover. Aim it after the run is pulled and the taps are set.
7) How do I set the volume on the MH-15W without pulling it off the wall?
Power taps are external and adjustable on the MH-15W, so the level is changed at the horn itself after it is mounted and aimed. Choose from 5.0K, 2.5K, 1.3K, 670, 330 or 90 ohms on the transformer, or bypass it entirely at the 8 ohm tap. On a distributed line, the lower the tap impedance the more wattage that horn pulls, so budget your taps against the amplifier before you set them all high.
8) Is the Aiphone MH-15W a commercial-grade speaker or a residential one?
Commercial. Aiphone classes the MH-15W as a commercial product, and the all-metal spun and die cast aluminum build with a 15W maximum rating is aimed at paging and signaling in demanding environments, the kind of thing an MRO or facilities buyer standardizes across docks, garages, and campus exteriors.
