Blackburn ALS11 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use an aluminum compression lug like the ALS11 on copper conductor?
The ALS11 barrel is aluminum and the cable size data covers 4/0 ACSR and 4/0 stranded AWG aluminum conductor. For copper runs use a copper compression lug sized to the conductor instead. Mixing an aluminum-bodied lug onto copper cable is not what this part is built for.
2) Will the ALS11 bolt pattern line up with my panel or switchgear pad?
It's a one-hole lug with NEMA standard mounting holes, so the pad hole spacing matches typical panelboard, transformer and switchgear terminal pads drilled to NEMA. One hole means one bolt, so it resists rotation less than a two-hole lug. Where the spec on the drawing calls for two-hole terminations (common on grounding and on utility gear), order a two-hole 4/0 aluminum lug instead.
3) Does a compression lug need a special tool, or can I torque it down like a mechanical lug?
Compression is the connection type on the ALS11, so the barrel is crimped onto the conductor with a hydraulic or battery crimp tool and the correct die. There is no set screw. If you want a screw-type termination you can install with a hex key and a torque wrench, you need a mechanical set-screw lug, not this one.
4) Is the ALS11 a lug or a splice connector?
It's a cable lug, a terminal end that crimps onto the conductor and bolts to a pad. It does not join two cables together. For a conductor-to-conductor connection you want a compression splice or an H-tap, not a one-hole lug.
5) How is the Blackburn ALS11 lug sold, individually or in packs?
Sold each. On a three-phase plus neutral termination you'd be ordering four, and it pays to count both ends of the run.
6) Where is the Blackburn ALS11 lug made?
Country of origin is Mexico. That's the detail to have in hand for government and institutional submittals that require origin disclosure on electrical material.
