Blackburn WR9 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn WR9 H-tap connector take?
The WR9 is sized for a 3 to 6 AWG main run with a 2 to 6 AWG tap, per the WR9 designation (3-6 ASCR run, 2-6 tap). It joins two conductors, a run and a tap, in one crimp. If your run is larger than 6 AWG or your tap falls outside 2 to 6 AWG, you need a different WR-series H-tap.
2) Is the Blackburn WR9 a crimp connector or a set-screw connector?
It's a compression (crimp) tap. You seat the run and tap conductors in the H-shaped body and compress it with a hydraulic or battery crimper using the matching die. There is no screw to torque and no re-torquing later, which is why utility and service crews use H-taps for permanent splices instead of mechanical set-screw connectors.
3) Does the Blackburn WR9 meet utility connector specs for a co-op or municipal job?
It complies with ANSI C119.4, the standard covering electric connectors for use between aluminum and copper conductors, and it is RUS Accepted, which is what rural electric co-op and RUS-funded work typically calls for on connectors.
4) Can I use the Blackburn WR9 H-tap on aluminum conductors and on ACSR?
Yes. The WR9 is an aluminum-bodied H-tap rated for ACSR run conductors in the 3 to 6 AWG range. Aluminum-bodied compression taps of this type are used on both aluminum and copper conductors in secondary and service work, but for a copper-to-aluminum connection confirm the conductor combination against the die chart for the size you're crimping.
5) Does the Blackburn WR9 come insulated, or do I have to tape or sleeve it?
It ships bare, with no insulation on the body. Any covering is up to you, normally tape, a cold-shrink or heat-shrink sleeve, or a pre-formed insulating cover sized to the connector, and you supply that separately.
6) What temperature is the WR9 H-tap connector good for?
Rated for conductor operating temperatures up to 90 degrees C, so it works with 90 C rated building wire and typical secondary/service conductors without derating the connection.
7) How long is the WR9 connector body, and will it fit in a tight pedestal or handhole?
The body is 13/16 inch long, so it takes very little room along the conductor. That short length is what makes H-taps workable in crowded pedestals, meter sockets and handholes where a split-bolt plus tape buildup would not fit, but you still need clearance for the crimper head and die.
8) Can an H-tap like the WR9 be reused or removed later?
No. A compression H-tap is a permanent connection. Once crimped, the only way off is to cut it out and re-splice. If you need a connection you can open for testing or future re-tapping, use a mechanical set-screw tap or a split-bolt instead of the WR9.
9) Is the Blackburn WR9 sold individually or in a bag?
Sold each, one connector per unit, so order one per splice. For a service change or a pedestal rebuild count your taps and order to that quantity.
