The PAA129 is built for a 4/0 through 2 conductor range, and it lands two conductors, one in each groove. It is a two-conductor bolted clamp, so it is for splicing or tapping one run to another, not for landing three or more wires under one body.

The PAA129 body is aluminum. Aluminum-bodied parallel groove clamps are rated for aluminum-to-aluminum unless the clamp is specifically marked AL9CU for dual-rated use. If your run is copper, or copper to aluminum, specify a dual-rated clamp rather than this one.

A bolted parallel groove clamp like the PAA129 is a mechanical splice you can install with hand tools and take apart later, which is why it gets used for grounding, bonding, and tap connections where the joint may need to be opened. A compression splice needs a hydraulic or battery crimper and dies, and it is permanent. If you have no crimper on the truck, or you want a reworkable joint, the bolted clamp wins.

It uses a 1/2 inch bolt with a 3/4 inch head, so a 3/4 inch socket or wrench does the job. Bring a torque wrench if the job spec calls out a tightening value on the connector.

The clamp measures 2-1/4 x 2 x 2 inches (height x length x width), plus whatever bend radius your 4/0 conductor needs and swing room for a 3/4 inch socket on the bolt. Tight pull boxes and shallow gutters are where these get awkward.

It is a bare clamp with no insulation on it. Anywhere the splice needs to be covered, you insulate in the field with tape or a cover, or install it inside an enclosure. Straight grounding and bonding connections typically stay bare.
