Blackburn PAE335-79 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use an aluminum parallel groove clamp on copper wire, or is the PAE335-79 aluminum only?
The body is aluminum, and it is supplied with CONTAX compound already in the grooves, which is what lets aluminum connectors be made up on aluminum or copper conductors without the oxide film ruining the joint. Keep in mind the copper-to-aluminum orientation rules your inspector applies: put the copper conductor below the aluminum one in a vertical run so copper salts do not wash down onto the aluminum.
2) Is the PAE335-79 a compression connector or a mechanical bolted one?
Bolted, not crimped. You make it up with a wrench, no hydraulic tool or die set required, and it can be taken apart later if the run changes. If the job spec calls for an irreversible compression splice, this is the wrong style of connector.
3) Can I splice two different wire sizes together with this parallel groove clamp?
Yes. Each of the two grooves accepts a conductor anywhere in the 6 AWG to 1/0 range, so you can join a 1/0 feeder to a 6 AWG grounding or tap conductor in the same clamp. Both conductors just have to fall inside that range.
4) Will a parallel groove clamp work for bonding a ground electrode conductor to a rod?
No. A parallel groove clamp like the PAE335-79 joins two conductors running side by side, which is a wire-to-wire splice or tap. Bonding a conductor to a ground rod calls for a rod clamp sized to the rod diameter, and clamping to water pipe or structural steel needs the pipe or lay-in style clamp instead.
5) What size wrench or socket do I need to install the PAE335-79 clamp?
It uses a 3/8 inch bolt, so a 3/8 inch hardware set is what you are torquing. The clamp overall measures 1-9/16 x 1-1/4 x 1-1/2 inches, which matters when you are fitting it inside a crowded pedestal, meter socket, or pull box.
6) Does the PAE335-79 clamp come insulated or do I need to tape and cover it?
It ships bare, with no insulation on the body. Any insulating or re-jacketing of the finished splice is on you, so plan on tape, a cover, or an enclosure if the connection is not inside grounded equipment.
7) How is the Blackburn PAE335-79 sold, individually or in a box?
Sold each, so you order the exact count you need rather than a carton quantity. For grounding work where you are placing one clamp per run, that keeps the material order clean. It is manufactured in Mexico.
