1) What wire sizes does the Blackburn 40CA split bolt connector take?
The 40CA covers 4/0 stranded down to 2/0 solid. That range is the whole basis for picking it, so if your run tap is smaller than 2/0 solid or larger than 4/0 stranded, this is the wrong body and you need the adjacent size in the series.
2) Is the Blackburn 40CA connector aluminum or copper, and can I use it on copper conductors?

A split bolt is a mechanical connector, made up with a wrench, so it needs no crimp tool or die set and it can be taken apart later if the tap changes. That makes it the practical choice for service and maintenance work in a box, pull box, or gutter. A compression sleeve is the one to use where the splice has to be permanent and low profile, or where the job spec calls for a crimped connection. The 40CA is the mechanical option.
5) Does a split bolt splice need to be taped or insulated after it is made up?
Yes. The 40CA is a bare metallic aluminum connector with no insulation of its own, so the completed tap has to be insulated to the level of the conductor insulation, normally rubber splicing tape plus a vinyl overwrap, or a molded cover. Allow room in the box for the finished, taped bundle, not just the bare connector.
6) Is the Blackburn 40CA sold individually or in a box?
