Blackburn APS500 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire range does the Blackburn APS500 split bolt connector take?
The APS500 is a dual-rated split bolt sized for a main run of 500 kcmil down to a tap of 2 stranded, per the 500-2STR range in its designation. It's a mechanical tap connector, so the main conductor stays continuous and the tap is clamped alongside it under the bolt.
2) Can I use the Blackburn APS500 on copper conductors, or aluminum only?
It's an AL/CU dual-rated connector, so it can be used on aluminum, copper, or a mixed aluminum-to-copper connection. The body is aluminum with an electro tin-plated finish, which is what makes the copper contact acceptable. Use a suitable joint compound on aluminum terminations as your installation practice requires.
3) Will one APS500 handle both a large feeder and a small branch tap at the same time?
That's exactly what the range is for. The connector spans a 500 kcmil main down to a 2 stranded tap, so a heavy feeder and a much smaller branch conductor seat in the same saddle. If your tap is smaller than 2 AWG, this is the wrong size and you need a lower-range split bolt.
4) Does the APS500 come with insulation, or do I need to tape or cover the splice?
It ships as a bare tin-plated aluminum split bolt only. You insulate the completed tap yourself, either with tape build-up or a split-bolt insulating cover sized to the connector. Nothing is included for that.
5) Split bolt or compression connector for a 500 kcmil service tap?
A split bolt like the APS500 is the choice when you want a re-enterable mechanical connection and don't want to bring a hydraulic crimper and the right die to the job. It's tightened with a wrench and can be backed off later. A compression lug or H-tap gives a permanent, lower-profile joint that's easier to insulate, and is usually preferred where space in the enclosure is tight. For a 500-2 tap in a pull box with room to tape it up, the mechanical split bolt is the simpler call.
6) Is the Blackburn APS500 sold individually or in a box?
It's sold each, so you order the exact count you need rather than a carton. Handy when a tap job needs a specific number of connectors. Part number is APS500 and it's made in Mexico.
