The difference is the tamper switch contact type. The SMB-01 surface mount box comes with two normally open tamper switches; the SMB-01A comes with two normally closed tamper switches. Pick the one that matches how your alarm panel or access control input is supervised, since a N/O switch wired into a N/C loop will not report a tamper correctly.
2) Which Alarm Controls SMB box do I need for a 1-3/4 inch narrow stile push plate?
Use the SMB-3 or the SMB-3D. Both are narrow surface mount boxes built for 1-3/4 inch wide wall plates, which is the narrow stile size used on aluminum storefront doors. The SMB-01 and SMB-01A are the single gang size instead, so they will not match a 1-3/4 inch narrow plate.
3) Can I surface mount an Alarm Controls push plate on a wall or door with no back box cut in?
That is exactly what the SMB is for. It is a surface mounting box for Alarm Controls request to exit push plates, so you can mount on block, tile, glass front mullions, or a hollow metal door where cutting in a recessed gang box is not practical. No. Tamper switches are on the single gang boxes only: the SMB-01 with two N/O switches and the SMB-01A with two N/C switches. The narrow stile SMB-3 and SMB-3D are described by size and finish only. If you need tamper reporting on a narrow stile opening, plan on a separate tamper input.
6) Does the SMB box come with the push plate, or do I order that separately?
Order the plate separately. The SMB is the mounting box only, sized to take an Alarm Controls push plate or wall plate.
