Allied Moulded FlexBox Thermoplastic Multi-Gang Residential Switch Box

The Allied Moulded FlexBox® Residential Switch Box is a thermoplastic electrical box family built for residential switch and receptacle installations, available in Gang Configurations ranging from 2-Gang to 3-Gang. Each box in this family is molded from durable, non-conductive thermoplastic material, offering electricians a lightweight, corrosion-resistant alternative to metal boxes for new construction and remodel wiring. Sized to house standard switch and receptacle devices along with associated wiring, the FlexBox® line is purpose-built as a residential/receptacle electrical switch box for everyday rough-in work.

Key Features

Allied Moulded P-442 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Allied Moulded FlexBox switch box made for new construction or for cutting into an existing wall?
The FlexBox residential switch box is a new work box, meaning it mounts to framing during rough-in before drywall goes up. It is not a remodel/old work box with wing clips for cutting into finished drywall. If you're opening a wall back to the studs on a remodel, a new work box still applies; if you're cutting a hole in existing finished drywall with no stud access, you need an old work box instead.
2) What gang sizes does the Allied Moulded FlexBox residential switch box come in, and what are the part numbers?
Two configurations: 2-gang, part number P-442, and 3-gang, part number P-643. The 2-gang holds two switches or receptacles (or one of each), the 3-gang holds three devices under a single three-hole plate.
3) How deep is the FlexBox multi-gang switch box, and will it clear a 2x4 stud wall?
Depth is 3-9/16 inches and height is 3-3/4 inches. A nominal 2x4 stud is 3-1/2 inches deep, so at 3-9/16 inches this box is deeper than the stud face and is intended to be mounted flush to the drywall line on the stud edge, not buried inside the cavity. In a standard 2x4 wall with 1/2 inch drywall you have 4 inches of total depth, so it fits, but it will not work in a furred-out 2x2 wall or over a solid surface with no cavity.
4) Can I use a non-metallic box like the FlexBox instead of a steel box for residential switches?
Yes. The FlexBox is molded thermoplastic, so it is non-conductive and corrosion resistant, and it does not require bonding of the box itself the way a metal box does. It is lighter to handle on a rough-in and a common choice with NM cable in residential work. Where you need a metal box is where the wiring method relies on the box for grounding continuity, such as EMT or MC, or where a job spec calls out metallic boxes.
5) Is the Allied Moulded FlexBox box a wall box or can it be used in a ceiling for a fixture?
It's classified as a wall box, sized for switch and receptacle devices. It is not a ceiling or fixture-support box and should not be used to hang a luminaire or fan. For overhead work you need a ceiling box rated for fixture support, and for a fan a box specifically listed for fan support.
6) Will a standard two-gang or three-gang cover plate fit the FlexBox P-442 and P-643?
Yes. Both boxes take standard devices on standard gang spacing, so a normal 2-gang plate goes on the P-442 and a 3-gang plate on the P-643. Plates are not included with the box and are ordered separately, as are the devices themselves.
7) I'm running a bank of three switches at an entry. Do I use one 3-gang box or three single boxes?
One 3-gang FlexBox, part number P-643, keeps all three devices in a single enclosure under one plate and gives you one box volume to work your conductors in rather than three sets of splices. Gang them separately only if you need the devices spread apart on the wall. The P-442 covers the two-device version of the same job.
8) Are Allied Moulded FlexBox electrical boxes made in the USA?
Yes, the FlexBox thermoplastic boxes are made in the United States, which matters on public and institutional projects carrying domestic-sourcing requirements.
