The Amerex MP Series is a line of multi-purpose ABC dry chemical fire extinguishers available in 2.5, 5, 5A, 6, 10, and 20 lb capacities. Each unit uses a specially fluidized and siliconized mono ammonium phosphate agent that smothers Class B flammable liquid fires, fuses and insulates Class A ordinary combustibles, and provides non-conductive suppression for Class C electrical fires. MP5 vs. MP5A — Which 5 lb Model Do You Need?

Both models weigh 5 lb and share the same dimensions, agent, and construction. The difference is UL rating: the MP5 is rated 2A-10B:C, while the MP5A carries a significantly higher 3A-40B:C rating — better coverage for ordinary combustibles and four times the flammable-liquid coverage. If your code or risk assessment calls for a higher B rating in a 5 lb package, specify the MP5A.

1) Can I use an Amerex ABC dry chemical extinguisher on a live electrical panel or in a server room?
On a panel or in an electrical room, yes. The mono ammonium phosphate agent is non-conductive, so it can be discharged on energized equipment, and every MP model carries the C rating. A server room is the case to think twice about. Dry chemical leaves a fine powder that settles into boards and connectors and is corrosive to electronics, so where the hardware itself is the thing you are protecting, a clean agent extinguisher that leaves no residue is the better tool at the rack. Switchgear rooms, panel areas, motor control centers and mechanical spaces are exactly what the MP Series is for.
2) Can I use an ABC dry chemical extinguisher in a commercial kitchen instead of a Class K unit?
Not as the unit at the cooking line. The MP Series is rated for Class A, B and C only. Cooking oil and grease in a fryer, range or under a hood is Class K, and that hazard needs a wet chemical Class K extinguisher, which saponifies the oil and does not risk splashing hot grease the way a dry chemical discharge can. An MP unit is still the right choice for the rest of the kitchen area, dry storage, back of house and the service corridor, so most food service spaces end up carrying both.
3) Should I buy an ABC multi-purpose extinguisher or a BC dry chemical for a mechanical room?
ABC is the general answer, and it is what the MP Series is. Its mono ammonium phosphate agent fuses and insulates burning Class A material, smothers flammable liquids, and is non-conductive for energized equipment, so one unit covers a room that has cardboard, oil and a live panel in it. A sodium bicarbonate BC extinguisher will knock down a liquid or electrical fire fast but does nothing to stop ordinary combustibles from reigniting, which is why BC is normally reserved for dedicated fuel handling or flammable liquid areas rather than general mechanical spaces. If a room has any ordinary combustible load at all, go ABC.
4) Are the Amerex MP extinguishers UL listed for a code submittal?
UL Listed and ULC Listed, conforming to ANSI/UL299, ANSI/UL711, CAN/ULC-S504 and CAN/ULC S508. UL 711 is the rating and fire testing standard, which is where the 2A-10B:C style ratings come from, and UL 299 is the construction and performance standard for dry chemical extinguishers. For a submittal package, the rating you cite is per model: 1A-10B:C for the MP2.5, 2A-10B:C for the MP5 and MP6, 3A-40B:C for the MP5A, 4A-60B:C for the MP10 and 10A-120B:C for the MP20.
