AMERICAN LOCK A20KA BRASS BODY REKEYABLE PADLOCK (HIDDEN SHACKLE) OVERVIEW

A20KA Brass Body Rekeyable Padlock (Hidden Shackle). Non-Rekeyable Padlocks - Solid Brass.

The American Lock No. A20KA Solid Body Padlock features a 1-3/4in (44mm) wide solid brass body to resist corrosion and a 1-1/8in (29mm) tall, 5/16in (8mm) diameter hardened boron alloy shackle for superior cut resistance. Ideal for harsh environments, a dual ball bearing mechanism resists pulling and prying while a 5-pin APTC12 non-rekeyable cylinder with serrated pins is virtually impossible to pick.

American Lock AME-A20KA 2KEY – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the American Lock A20KA fit my hasp? What is the shackle clearance?
The A20KA gives you 1-1/8 inch of vertical shackle clearance with a 3/4 inch clear width between the legs, on a 5/16 inch diameter shackle. That is a short, close-shackle setup, so the hasp staple needs a 5/16 inch or larger opening and the hasp has to close tight enough that 1-1/8 inches of vertical room is enough. The body itself is 1-3/4 inches wide, so allow that much flat seating area on the hasp plate.
2) Does keyed alike mean every A20KA padlock I order opens with the same key?
Yes. A20KA is the keyed alike version, so all the locks on one order share a single key change and one key opens the whole group. That is what you want for a maintenance crew carrying one key for a run of gates, lockers or storage units. If you need each lock on its own key instead, American Lock builds the same body as the A20 (A20KD) keyed different, and there are master keyed builds, A20MK keyed different under a master and A20KAMK keyed alike under a master.
3) I already have American Lock A20KA padlocks on site. Can I order more on my existing key?
Yes, but you have to give us the key code. There is a key code field on the order, and that is how a new batch gets cut to match the locks already hanging on your property instead of arriving on a fresh, unrelated key change. The code is stamped on the original key or on the lock's paperwork. Leave it blank and the locks come keyed alike to each other only.
4) The A20KA shackle is too short for my chain link gate. What else should I look at?
With only 1-1/8 inches of shackle height, the A20KA will not reach through a gate chain or a thick doubled hasp, and forcing the issue just means the shackle will not close. For that opening, go to a long shackle lock: Sargent 60-858-2 carries a 2 inch stainless steel shackle and takes a removable core. If the problem is the gate rather than the lock, the A20KA can be ordered with a 9 inch #40 sash chain to tether it in place instead.
5) What is the closest brass-body padlock to the American Lock A20KA with the same shackle diameter?
The Schlage KS23D/KS23F is the nearest match on the two specs that usually drive the swap: it is a brass padlock with a 5/16 inch diameter shackle, the same shackle diameter the A20KA carries, and the A20KA body is likewise brass. The A20KA is a 1-3/4 inch wide body with a 1-1/8 inch shackle length and a hidden-shackle design, so if the reason for the brass body is corrosive or marine exposure, confirm the Schlage will seat in the same hasp before swapping.
6) I need a brass padlock that takes my existing high-security key system instead of the American Lock A20KA cylinder. What are the options?
Two brass-case padlocks cover that. The Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body padlock with a 7/16 inch shackle diameter built around M3 key technology, and the Sargent 82-856 is a non-key-retaining padlock with a 2 inch by 2 inch brass case and a stainless steel shackle in the KESO series. Both are heavier-shackle locks than the A20KA, which uses a 5/16 inch shackle on a 1-3/4 inch wide body with a non-rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder, so they suit a facility already keyed into Medeco or Sargent rather than a standalone keyed-alike set.
7) The hasp needs more shackle clearance than the American Lock A20KA offers. What should I use instead?
The A20KA is a hidden-shackle lock with only a 1-1/8 inch shackle length and 3/4 inch shackle width, which is deliberately tight to the body. Where you need real clearance, the Sargent 60-858-2 carries a 2 inch stainless steel shackle and is a removable core padlock, and the Sargent 858 is a non-key-retaining padlock with a stainless steel shackle in a US4 satin brass finish that reads close to the A20KA gold body.
8) We rekey in house with interchangeable cores. Is the American Lock A20KA the right padlock for that program?
No - the A20KA uses a non-rekeyable 5-pin APTC12 cylinder, so it is keyed at the factory and the keyed-alike set is fixed at order time by the key code you supply. For a core-based program, the Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless steel shackle. The Medeco 521 G8R is another route if the issue is weather-tight service, as it is supplied less pop-out cylinder on a solid stainless steel body so you install your own cylinder.
9) Why choose a brass body padlock over steel for a dock, boat or coastal site?
Corrosion is the reason. The A20KA uses a solid brass body, which holds up in salty, damp and chemically caustic air far better than a plated steel body, and the shackle is hardened boron alloy steel for cut resistance. American Lock lists it for marine and offshore security, self-storage, sheds, workshops and garages. Inside the locking mechanism, dual stainless steel ball bearings grip the shackle so it resists pulling and prying.
10) How many keys come with each American Lock A20KA padlock?
You pick the key count at order time. The A20KA is built with 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 keys per lock, with 2 keys per lock being the standard pack. Facilities running keyed alike sets usually drop to 0 or 1 key per lock, since one key already opens the whole set and extra duplicates just multiply the number of copies floating around a building.
11) Can I get the A20KA padlock with a chain so it stays attached to the gate?
Yes. The A20KA can be ordered with a #40 sash chain, 9 inches (229mm) long, zinc plated, or with no chain at all. The chain keeps the padlock tethered to the hasp or gate frame so it does not get set down and lost once the opening is unlocked. Both the chain and the key count are separate choices, so any key quantity can be had with or without the chain.
12) What is a good alternative to the American Lock A20KA if I need a rekeyable or removable core brass padlock?
A few directions, depending on what you need. Schlage KS23D/KS23F is a brass padlock on the same 5/16 inch shackle diameter, so hasp fit carries over. Sargent 758 is a key retaining brass padlock in US4 satin brass, and Sargent 858 is the non-key-retaining version if you do not want the key trapped while the lock is open. If your facility is on a removable core system, Sargent 60-858-2 is a removable core padlock with a 2 inch stainless shackle for taller hasps and chain links. Medeco 5260 is a 52 Series brass body lock with a heavier 7/16 inch shackle and M3 key technology.
13) Can I use the American Lock A20KA for electrical lockout tagout?
It is not the lock built for that. The A20KA is a solid brass commercial padlock intended for marine and offshore security, self-storage and lockers, sheds and garages. For lockout work, the ABUS 74/40 is an insulated safety padlock with a 6-pin cylinder, 1/4 inch shackle diameter and 1-1/2 inch body, and the ABUS 72/30 is an anodized aluminum safety padlock with a 1-1/4 inch body - both are safety-series locks with non-conductive or light-body construction suited to personnel lockout.
14) Is an ABUS 72/30 or 76/40 a substitute for the American Lock A20KA on a marine or outdoor gate?
They are built for a different job. The ABUS 72/30 is an anodized aluminum safety padlock with a 1-1/4 inch body and 3/16 inch shackle, and the ABUS 76/40 is a plastic-covered aluminum core padlock with a 1/4 inch shackle - both lighter-shackle locks in the lockout and safety family. The A20KA is a solid brass 1-3/4 inch body with a 5/16 inch hardened boron alloy shackle and a dual ball bearing locking mechanism, specified for marine and offshore security. If corrosion resistance on an exposed gate is the requirement, the ABUS T84MB/30 Nautic is the ABUS model aimed at that environment, though it runs a 13/64 inch shackle on a 1-17/64 inch body.
15) What do I use instead of the American Lock A20KA if the key must not be removable while the lock is open?
The A20KA is not a key-retaining lock. The Sargent 758 is a key retaining standard padlock in a US4 satin brass finish, which is the usual choice where policy requires the key to stay captive until the lock is relocked. By contrast the Sargent 858 and the Medeco 54515G are both non-key-retaining, so neither solves that requirement.
16) We want audit trail on padlocked gates. Is there an electronic alternative to the American Lock A20KA?
Yes. The Medeco 54515G is an XT electronic indoor/outdoor padlock supplied with cylinder, non-key-retaining, and it runs the same 5/16 inch shackle diameter as the A20KA, so the hasp fit is comparable. The A20KA is a mechanical lock with a 5-pin APTC12 cylinder and no access record, so the electronic route is the one to take when you need to know who opened what and when.
17) How does the American Lock A20KA cylinder resist picking?
It runs a 5-pin APTC12 cylinder with serrated pins. Serrated pins give false sets under a pick, which is what makes the plug hard to manipulate. Combined with the dual ball bearing shackle retention, the attack surfaces a thief would normally go after, the keyway and the shackle heel, are both covered.
18) How many American Lock A20KA padlocks come in a case for a bulk facility order?
Packaging runs 6 per shelf pack and 24 per master carton. That is useful when you are standardizing a storage facility or a multi-family property on one keyed alike group, since ordering in full cartons keeps the receiving count clean and the locks all land on the same key change.
